their commerce, invited numbers to ſettle among them; and thus, by the introduction of arts, population, and induſtry, Surat became in a few years, one of the moſt conſiderable towns in the world. It is defended by a wall and towers, and has a ſquare caſtle with a tower at, each angle on the, S. W. part of it, which commands both the river, and the avenues to the town by land.
