way of fortification: it has alſo river on the weſt, and the ſea on the eaſt; and to the northward a canal is cut from the river to the ſea, which ſerves for as meat on that ſide The ſtreets of the black-town are wide; and trees planted in ſome of them; and having the ſea on one ſide and a river on the other, there are few towns ſo pleaſantly ſituated or better ſupplied; but except ſome few brick houſes, the reſt are cottages built with clay and thatched. The houſes of the better ſort of Indians, are of the ſame materials and built uſuall in one form, with a little, ſquare in the middle, from whence they receive all their light.
