SCENE I. The Office of a Summer Hotel at Highland Hills, New Hampshire. It is one of those comfortably ar ranged offices that does duty at the height of the season as a gathering- place for guests after breakfast and dinner, where men may smoke if there are any to smoke and they wish to do so, and the women assemble to put sofa-cushions, embroidered centre-pieces, knitted golf- vests, and other things together while pulling reputations apart. The walls are decorated with lithographed ideals of other summer hotels in distant parts of the country, advertisements of railways, time-tables, and portraits of imaginary trout that were not caught in the ad jacent streams. At right is elevator.
