37. Carriageway markings as shown in diagram No. RM7 in the Second Schedule may be placed on a road only to supplement a sign of the type shown in either of the diagrams Nos. 205 and 206 or in cases where it is necessary to supplement any of the warning signs specified in Part I of the First Schedule to the Regulations.

38. Carriageway markings as shown in either of the diagrams Nos. RM10 and RM11 in the Second Schedule shall be placed on a road only to indicate the limits of a parking place at which there is placed a sign shown in either of the diagrams Nos. 487 and 488.

39. Carriageway markings as shown in either of the diagrams Nos. RM14 and RM15 in the Second Schedule may be placed on a road only to supplement a sign shown in any of the diagrams Nos. 209, 210, 213 and 215.

40. No sign , beacon or portable traffic light signals used in accordance with the provisions of Regulations 23 , 24 or 29 respectively of the Regulations may be retained at any place after the expiration of six months from the date on which the sign , beacon or signals were erected at that place or of such longer time as may be approved in writing by or on behalf of the Minister or the Secretary of State, as the case may be, or in any case after the termination of the need for such sign, beacon or signals.

41. Where a traffic sign shown in any of the diagrams in the First Schedule to the Regulations, not being a sign shown in any of the diagrams Nos. 158, 316 to 320 inclusive, 471 and 472 is mounted on or attached to a post specially provided for that purpose, such post shall be painted in alternate black and white bands each band being not less than 11 inches nor more than 13 inches in width.

42. Every sign shown in any of the diagrams Nos. 316 to 321 inclusive shall be mounted on or attached to—

(a) a post specially provided for the purpose and every such post shall be painted in alternate black and yellow horizontal bands each band being not less than 11 inches nor more than 13 inches in width; or

(b) a lamp post or other standard which in either case may be painted with one or more yellow horizontal bands each band being not less than 11 inches nor more than 13 inches in width.

43. Nothing in these Directions shall be taken to limit the power of the Minister or the Secretary of State, as the case may be, by any special Direction to dispense with, add to or modify any of the requirements of these Directions in their application to any particular case.

Part III

GENERAL CITATION AND COMMENCEMENT

This Instrument may be cited as "The Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions, 1957", and shall come into operation on the first day of March, 1957.
