EXPLANATORY NOTE
(This Note is not part of the Regulations, but is intended to indicate their general purport.)
These Regulations amend the Traffic Signs Regulations, 1957. The main changes are:
1. It is provided that, where the sign ("Halt at Major Road Ahead") shown in diagram 204 in the First Schedule to the earlier Regulations is illuminated by lighting, and such lighting is so arranged as also to illuminate the surmounting ringed triangle , it shall not be necessary for the ringed triangle to be fitted with red reflectors.
2. Four new traffic signs are prescribed .

The Secretary of State and the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation acting jointly in exercise of their powers under section 48 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930(a)[1], as read with the Transfer of Functions (Roads, Bridges and Ferries) Order, 1955(b)[2], and of all other powers them enabling in that behalf hereby give the following Directions
1.—(1) These Directions shall come into operation on the first day of January, 1958, and may be cited as "The Traffic Signs General Directions (No. 2) 1957".
(2) The Interpretation Act, 1889(c)[3], shall apply to the interpretation of these Directions as it applies to the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.
2. The Traffic Signs General Directions 1957(d)[4], shall have effect as, though—
(a) for sub-paragraph (a) of paragraph 3 there were substituted the following sub-paragraphs:—
"(a) Nos. 113, 114, 115, 144, 148, 150, 151, 152, 153, 204, 308 to 315 inclusive, 327 and 405;
(aa) Nos . 209, 210, 211 , 214, 215 , 304 to 307 inclusive, 316 to 324 inclusive, and 326 if placed on a road to indicate the effect of an Order made by the Secretary of State or the Minister, as the case may be, or Regulations made by the Minister;";
(b) in paragraph 4 the number 325 were omitted;
(c) at the end of paragraph 37 there were added the following words "or any of the informatory signs shown in diagrams Nos . 429 to 448 inclusive, 450, 452 or 479.";
