section 1 of the Road Traffic Act, 1934(a)[1], sections 4 and 35 of the Road Traffic Act, 1956(b)[2], and of all other powers them enabling in that behalf hereby make the following Regulations:—
1. These Regulations shall come into operation on the first day of March, 1957, and may be cited as the Traffic Signs (30 m.p.h. Speed Limit) Regulations, 1957.
2. The Traffic Signs (Speed Limit) Regulations, 1941(c)[3], are hereby revoked, without prejudice, however, to the validity of anything done there under or to any liability incurred in respect of any act or omission before the coming into operation of these Regulations.
3.—(1) Any reference in these Regulations to any enactment shall be construed as a reference to that enactment as amended by any subsequent enactment.
(2) The Interpretation Act , 1889(d)[4], shall apply to the interpretation of these Regulations as it applies to the interpretation of an Act of Parliament.
4. Signs for S. 1 of the Road Traffic Act, 1934
(a) a traffic sign for conveying information that a length of road is deemed to be a road in a built-up area and that accordingly drivers of motor vehicles are subject to a speed limit of thirty miles per hour on that length of road;
(b) a traffic sign for conveying information as to the point at which a length of road ceases to be a road which is deemed to be a road in a built-up area; and
(c) a traffic sign for conveying information that a length of road is not deemed to be a road in a built-up area.
5. Every traffic sign mentioned in paragraph (a) of the last preceding Regulation shall be of the size, colour and type shown in either diagram 1, diagram 2 or diagram 3 in the First Schedule to these Regulations:
Provided that such a sign may be of the size, colour and type shown in diagram 1 in the Second Schedule to these Regulations, if it was erected before the coming into operation of these Regulations.
6. Every traffic sign mentioned in paragraph (b) of Regulation 4 of these Regulations shall be of the size, colour and type shown in diagram 4 in the First Schedule to these Regulations:
Provided that such a sign may be of the size, colour and type shown in diagram 2 in the Second Schedule to these Regulations, if it was erected before the coming into operation of these Regulations.
