Penalty of one thousand dollars for neglect or refusal of sheriffs.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That each and every sheriff, that now is, or hereafter may be appointed in said territory, who shall either neglect or refuse to perform the duties required by an act, entituled “An act extending the right of suffrage in the Indiana territory, and for other purposes,” passed in February, one thousand eight hundred and nine, shall be liable to a penalty of one thousand dollars, recoverable by action of debt, in any court of record, within the said territory, one half for the use of the informer, and the other for the use of the territory.

Persons holding places of profit, excluded from council, &c.Sec. 4. And be it further enacted, That any person holding, or who may hereafter hold, any office of profit from the governor of the Indiana territory (justices of the peace and militia officers excepted) shall be ineligible to, and disqualified to act as a member of the legislative council or house of representatives for said territory.

Sheriff to cause elections to be held under penalty of one thousand dollars.Sec. 5. And be it further enacted, That each and every sheriff, in each and every county, that now is or hereafter may be established in said territory, shall cause to be held the election prescribed by this act, according to the time and manner prescribed by the laws of said territory and this act, under the penalty of one thousand dollars, to be recovered in the manner and for the use pointed out by the third section of this act.

Chap. XL.An Act to increase the salaries of the Judges of the Circuit Court for the District of Columbia.

$200 per annum additional salary allowed to the chief justice of the circuit court for the district of Columbia, and $400 additional to each of the assistant judges.Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That in addition to the compensation heretofore allowed by law to the judges of the circuit court for the district of Columbia, the sum of two hundred dollars per annum be paid to the chief justice of the said court, and the sum of four hundred dollars per annum be paid to each of the assistant judges, payable quarter yearly; the first quarterly payment to be made on the first day of April next.

Chap. XLI.An Act making appropriations for carrying into effect a treaty between the United States and the Great and Little Osage nations of Indians, concluded at Fort Clarke, on the tenth day of November, one thousand eight hundred and eight, and for other purposes.

$5,000 appropriated for carrying into effect a treaty between the U. States and the Great and Little Osage nations; with a permanent annual appropriation of $1000 for the Great and $500 for the Little Osage nation.
$680 appropriated to pay the sum allowed J. E. Leitensdorfer by the act of Feb. 13, 1811, ch. 12.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That for the purpose of carrying into effect a treaty between the United States and the Great and Little Osage nations of Indians, concluded and signed at Fort Clarke on the Missouri, on the tenth day of November, one thousand eight hundred and eight, the sum of five thousand dollars be, and the same is hereby appropriated; and the further annual sum of one thousand dollars to the Great Osage nation, and of five hundred dollars to the Little Osage nation, to be paid annually to the said nations; which annuities shall be permanent.

Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That the sum of six hundred and eighty dollars be, and the same is hereby appropriated, for paying John Eugene Leitensdorfer the sum allowed him by the act passed on the thirteenth day of February, one thousand eight hundred and eleven.

Sec. 3. And be it further enacted, That the several sums appropriated by this act, shall be paid out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated.
