  1. Ethelred, archbishop of Canterbury; who died, A°. 888.
  2. Ethelwolf, the father of Alfred, died, 13 Jan. A°. 857-8, leaving four sons, 1. Ethelbald, 2. Ethelbert, 3. Ethered, 4. Alfred, who were successively kings of England; and one daughter, Ethelswith, who A°. 851, married Burthred, king of Mercia; and, after his death, A°. 873, became a nun at Padua, where she died A°. 889.
  3. K. Ethelwolf, made no mention, in his Will, of his second son, Ethelbert, having, in his life-time (on the death of Athelstan uncle of Ethelbert) A°. 851, given him the kingdom of the South-Saxons, East-Saxons, and Kent.
