Modern fiction

I do not perceive this novel as "modern fiction", neither do several works of secondary literature about it.

The period of "Modern literature" begins in the 19th century, which agrees with the date of the work, and the movement was primarily about breaking from earlier forms, which the author consciously attempted to do with the work, so it fits into that category whether you assign by date or by movement.
