@Library Guy: The Proofread Page extension (which is what provides the <pages /> tag) uses the links on the Index: page to determine the previous/next links (skipping the first link assuming it is the title, and any non-mainspace links). If those links do not conform to its expectations it will be confused and generate bogus next/previous links.
In this specific case the trigger was that you had stray newline characters inside the link label. This either confused both MediaWiki and ProofreadPage directly—since MediaWiki generated HTML <a href="…"></a> elements with a broken title attribute—or it confused just MediaWiki which in turn confused ProofreadPage. I'm not familiar with the implementation here so I'm not sure which, but the end result is the same in either case. --Xover (talk) 06:52, 27 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
