  1. மகதேவர் ஆடு இடித்துப் பேயும் ஆடுகிறது.
    When butted by a ram of Mahadévar, even the demon shakes its head.
  2. மகளுக்குப் புத்தி சொல்லித் தாய் அவசாரி போனாளாம்.
    The mother, having given advice to her daughter, played the harlot.
  3. மகள் செத்தாள் தாய் திக்கு அற்றாள்.
    The daughter is dead, the mother is become destitute.
  4. மகள் செத்தாற் பிணம் செத்தாற் சவம்.
    If the daughter die her remains are regarded as a pinam; if the son, his corpse is a savam.

    Thou modest son-in-law, do not kill the young buffaloa.
    This was said to a man by his mother-in-law. Wishing to appear to her a small eater he stinted himself at his ordinary meals, and yet appeared to flourish. Casting about for a solution of the mystery her attention was called to the ill condition of a young buffaloa. Suspecting that her son-in-law was the cause of this, she resolved to watch his movements. The following night she saw him emerge from his room and proceed to the buffaloa, whose milk he exhausted, and returned to his own quarters. On the morrow when he took his food she addressed him in the language of the proverb.

    In time of scarcity, mangoes, and in a season of plenty, tamarind fruit, are abundant.
  19. மங்கை தீட்டானால் கங்கையிலே முழுகுவாள் கங்கை தீட்டானால் எங்கே முழுகுவாள்?
    If the damsel is polluted she may be cleansed by the ganges, but if the ganges be polluted whither can she go?

    If such be the condition of the young fish, what will be that of the mother?

    The word மச்சான் is used for a brother-in-law, and also for a maternal uncle’s son.

    If my brother-in-law die I care not a hair, his cumbly mattress will be mine.

    Though one may not worship god by bathing him, and scattering flowers on him, we are taught to keep him in mind.

    Mary’s domestic life has come to an end.
  88. மருண்டவன் கண்ணுக்கு இருண்டதெல்லாம் பேய்.
    To a gloomy eye all obscure things are demons.
  89. மருத்து மாவுக்குச் சயிக்கினை, மடங்காக் குதிரைக்குச் சவுக்கடி.
    A sign to a fleet horse, whipping to an obstinate one.

    Though the quantity be little, like medicine, distribute before eating it.

    It is said that what she cooked for her son-in-law she gave to her son, and was distressed about it.
  94. மருவில் தின்ற சாப்பாட்டை லங்கணத்தில் நினைத்துக்கொண்டதுபோல.
    Like remembering, when hungry, the food of the marriage feast.

    Does the barren woman understand the pains of parturition?

  97. மலடியைப் பிள்ளை பெறச் சொன்னால் பெறுவாளா?
    If the barren woman be asked to bring forth a child, will she do so?
  98. மலரில் மணமும், எள்ளில் எண்ணையும், உடலில் உயிரும், கலந்தது போல.
    All pervading, like fragrance in a flower, oil in sesamum seed, and life in the body.

    An article forgotten is not good even for one’s children.

    If one say, I died through forgetfulness, will life return?
  135. மனக்கசடு அற மாயை நாடேல்.
    Seek not empty pleasures to purify the heart.
  136. மனக் கவலை பலக் குறைவு.
    Mental anxiety will diminish one’s strength.
  137. மனச்சாட்சி குற்றுமேல் மறுசாட்சி வேண்டாம்.
    If the conscience condemn, other evidence is unnecessary.
  138. மனதிலே பகை உதட்டிலே உறவு.
    Enmity at heart, friendship on the lips.
  139. மனதில் இருக்கும் இரகசியம் மதிகேடனுக்கு வாக்கிலே.
    A secret that should be concealed in the mind is uttered by a fool.
  140. மனதிற்கு மனதே சாட்சி, மற்றதற்குத் தெய்வமே சாட்சி.
    The heart is its own witness, God is the witness of the rest.

    Can a mind be ignorant of its own falsehood?

    Silent in the presence of men, in their absence a beaded cat.
  147. மனிதன் மறப்பான், குறைபடுவான், மாறுவான், போவான்.
    Man forgets, is reduced in circumstances, changes and vanishes.
  148. மனுஷன் தலையை மான் தலை ஆக்குகிறான் மான் தலையை மனுஷன் தலை ஆக்குகிறான்.
    He can transform a man’s head into the head of a deer, and he can make a man’s head out of a deer’s head.
  149. மனையாள் விடியுமுன் எழுந்து வீட்டுப் பண் செய்வாள்.
    A wife gets up before day-break and looks after her domestic affairs.
  150. மனையாளுக்கு உற்றது ஒன்றும் சொல்லவேண்டாம், மாற்றானை ஒரு நாளும் நம்பவேண்டாம்.
    Do not disclose your secrets to your wife, nor trust an enemy at any time.

    Is there any remedy for mental sickness?

    Kings have perished, their prime ministers have perished, and all who lived before, are dead.
