RUSTIC ADORNMENTS

FOR HOMES OF TASTE,

AND RECREATIONS FOR TOWN FOLK IN THE STUDY AND
IMITATION OF NATURE.

By SHIRLEY HIBBERD.

“ The work is in itself almost as pleasant an object of contemplation as the thing it treats of.”—John Bull.

“ The work is got up in good style, has many well-executed engravings and coloured plates, and forms a suitable book for the drawing-room table.”—Civil Engineer and Architect’s Journal.

“ Nothing could be more seasonable than this elegant book; it is beautifully illustrated, and, as a present to those whom we love or esteem, we do not know anything more appropriate.”—Cottage Gardener.

“ Aquariums, Ward’s Cases, Aviaries, Fernery, Bees, Rockwork, Garden Scenery, Fountains—in fact, everything delightful, will be found in this tasteful volume. The matter and manner of the work coincide happily, and each in turn well illustrates the other.”—Naturalist.

“ Here is a book which we can honestly and cordially recommend to all lovers of nature, as treating, in a simple, pleasant way, of the Vivarium, Ward’s Cases, Aviary, and other rustic adornments. Mr. Hibberd’s book, let us add, is embellished with remarkable taste.”—Leader.

“ An extremely pretty volume, nicely illustrated. The most casual reader will find something to interest and aid him in cultivating his acquaintance with those portions of the animal and vegetable kingdoms which may keep his love of nature alive in the city. It is indeed no small privilege to find how much may be done, even in the crowded street, to keep us in communication with a plant, a bird, an inhabitant of the waters or the air. We hold such subjects of observation very precious; and the book which teaches us how to preserve them is much to be esteemed as a household friend,”—Gentleman’s Magazine.

NIGHT AND THE SOUL;

A DRAMATIC POEM.

By STANYAN BIGG.

Crown 8vo, cloth, price 6s.
Noble and truthful. Beauties lie thick as stars upon the floor of Heaven—Sheffield Times.
Here is a book that will not die — it throbs with a vitality that will endure. The poet stands before us, and we are fascinated by his divine art. The work is felt to be a reality and a power, and commends itself by its pathos, purity, and elegance.—Christian Weekly News.
Nowhere out of ‘Festus’ do we find passages which heave and hurry along with a more genuine afflatus than in many of Mr. Bigg's pages. On the future career of such a one there can rest no shadows of uncertainty.—From a Criticism by George Gilfillan, author of ‘The Bards of the Bible.’
There is much of vigour and beauty both of thought and expression in the poem before us.—Eclectic Review.
‘Night and the Soul’ is a remarkable performance, and will take its stand with the ‘Festus’ of Bailey.—Daily Express.
We question whether there is any modern instance where selections from a poem would more dazzle a reader. "We can scarcely applaud too loudly, or too warmly.—Critic.
‘Night and the Soul’ at once places Stanyan Bigg in the front rank of English poets.—Bucks Chronicle.
In carefully going through this poem, we meet flashes of inspiration, and fine thoughts scattered with a bounteous hand.—Eliza Cook’s Journal.
Surpassed by nothing that we have met with in the whole compass of recent poetry.—Glasgow Christian News.
This poetry is indeed what it professes to be. Its ring is the ring of genuine metal.—Whitehaven Herald.
How it sparkles with gems! Beautiful pieces of imagery stand out from every page.—Random Readings.
We pay willing tribute to the magnificence of the diction, the profuse prodigality of the imagery, and the air of grandeur pervading it.—Weekly Dispatch.
‘Night and the Soul’ is a great poem. The passages are endless which we might be tempted to quote. It is altogether a work of great fascination.—Forres, Elgin, and Nairn Gazette.
Deep in philosophy, splendid in diction, and at once gorgeous and delicate in imagery, it has few compeers among the poetical productions of our time; we rank Stanyan Bigg as the poet, par excellence, of the rising generation.—Church of England Quarterly Review.
This is no volume to skim lightly over. ‘Night and the Soul’ is a poem undoubtedly of remarkable vigour of thought, and abounding with passages of great poetical power.—Dublin University Magazine.

LEAVES

FROM A FAMILY JOURNAL.

By EMILE SOUVESTRE.

with illustrations by anelay.

*** The exclusive right of translation has been secured by the Publishers, according to the International Copyright Convention between England and France. The present is, therefore, the only edition which can be published in this country.

“ Leaves from a Family Journal ” is a charming story, full of the finest feelings of human nature—pure in principle, safe in its morality. Every page teems with some good and wise precept. It is a book which every parent may read with profit, and place with certain advantage in the hands of a son or daughter.
The Critic, in reviewing this work, says, “ It is peculiarly a book for the family circle; for while it amuses as a narrative, it instructs insensibly, and that is the best of all instruction which teaches by example.”
“ It is a perfect picture of the hopes and fears, of the trials and joys of one family. The noble love of feeling displayed in every page of the work is truly admirable.”—Bucks Chronicle.
“ The volume before us, from the nature of its subject, the beautiful simplicity and graphic truthfulness of its handling, is one to be welcomed in every home.”—Ladies’ Companion.
“ ‘Leaves from a Family Jourual’ is a charming history of a young couple, from their marriage until the time when their children are grown up and leave the paternal roof. There is plenty of variety, and the practical lessons are very happily inculcated.”—Atlas.
“ We need hardly add that the tendency of the book is to promote the love of all that is beautiful and true.”—Tait’s Magazine.

THE SEA-SIDE LESSON BOOK.

By H. G. ADAMS,

Author of “ The Young Naturalist’s Library;” Favourite Song Birds;
“ Story of the Seasons,” etc. etc.

Designed to convey to the youthful mind a knowledge of the Nature and Uses
of the

COMMON THINGS OF THE SEA-COAST.

The matter of this little Manual of Instruction is arranged in Sections,
under such heads as

THE MIGHTY DEEP,

Comprising Oceans, Seas, Lakes, Rivers, nature of Water, different forms
it assumes, Theory of Tides, etc. etc.

SHIPS AND BOATS,

Origin and Progress of Naval Architecture, from the Raft, the Canoe, and the Coracle, up to the Man-of-War; different parts of a Ship; Sea Terms, etc. etc.

SAILORS AND FISHERMEN,

Early Navigation; Progress of Maritime Discovery; Great Sea Captains and Voyagers of Britain; Present State of the British Navy; Fishermen of Scripture and of Modern Times, etc. etc,

FISH AND FISHING,

Description of the Finny Tribes, and their Modes of Capture, etc. etc.

CRUSTACEOUS & TESTACEOUS ANIMALS, etc.

SEA-WEEDS, SEA-BIRDS, etc.

Different Species of Algæ, familiarly described; the various Winged Creatures that haunt the Shores, etc. etc.

One great design of this work is to cultivate, in the young, habits of observation and of reflection, to induce in them a desire for knowledge; it is written, as the author believes, in a religious spirit, and calculated, as be hopes, to be of service to those for whom it is intended. In order that it may be used as a lesson-look by teachers, numerous questions are appended to each section, and the meanings of the longer words, which it was found necessary to use, have been made plain by a reference to their derivatives.

“ Abounds with plain common sense. The author shows himself too sound a practitioner for any one to be afraid to follow his advice. It is not too medical in its construction, being prepared with an evident intention to advise those who are much occupied in the library, the study, and the counting-house, with the nature of the disorders to which they are subject, and how to adopt measures of prevention, relief, and removal.”—Bell's Weekly Messenger.

NEW HISTORY OF ENGLAND

FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.

18mo, cloth, One Shilling,

A HALF-YEARLY COURSE OF READING

LESSONS IN

ENGLISH HISTORY;

FORMING A CONCISE HISTORY OF ENGLAND,

For Elementary Schools of every Grade.

BY RICHARD BITHELL, C.T.,

Author of “ Spelling Taught by Transcribing and Dictation;” President
of the North Bucks and West Beds Teachers’ Asssociation.

The chief peculiarities of this Work are, its division into lessons of equal length, instead of the common mode of division into chapters, each Lesson treating of a distinct subject, and containing as much matter as can be read and remembered without undue labour on the part of teacher or pupil; and in the exclusion of those details of war and bloodshed, which too frequently occupy the attention of children on their first introduction to History. An attempt has also been made to treat every historical event in such a manner as to cherish sentiments of charity and forbearance towards all good men, by refraining from the unchristian practice of exciting odium against whole bodies and sects of men, on account of the vices and enormities of particular individuals.

Appended to the work are copious Genealogical, Chronological, and other tables, from which the teacher may collect facts and dates, wherewith to fill up the historical outline given in the body of the work, if, for the class of children under his tuition, they are found somewhat too meagre. With the exception of a few schools, however, who make History a very special subject, the author conceives that, in the present state of popular education, this little work will be found to contain about as much as can be really learnt in elementary schools, unless it be to the exclusion of other subjects equally, if not more, important.
