That is why it is called the city of David. 8 And he built up the city around it, from the Millo and around, and Joab restored the rest of the city. 9 And David continued to grow stronger, and Yahweh of Armies was with him.

But David refused to drink it, and poured it out to Yahweh. 19 And he said, My god forbid that I should do such a thing! Should I drink the blood of these men who risked their lives? 16 And some of the Benjamites and Judahites came to the stronghold to David. 17 And David went out to meet them, and said to them, If you have come to me with honest and peaceful intentions to help me, we will be joined at the heart. But if you betray me to my enemies, when I am not guilty of harming anyone, may the god of our fathers see it and judge. 18 And a spirit came upon Amasai, the leader of the thirty, [and he said,] We are yours, David; on your side, son of Jesse. Peace, peace to you, and peace to those who aid you, because your god aids you. And David accepted them, and made them troop leaders.
19 And some of Manasseh turned to David, when he came with the Philistines against Saul for battle. 23 And these are the numbers of the leaders who were equipped for battle, who came to David at Hebron, to turn the kingdom of Saul over to him, as Yahweh had said. 24 The Judahites who bore shield and lance were six thousand eight hundred, equipped for battle. 25 Of the Simeonites, mighty warriors in battle, seven thousand one hundred. 26 Of the Levites, four thousand six hundred. 27 And Jehoiada was the leader of the Aaronites, and with him were three thousand seven hundred. 28 And Zadok, a valiant young warrior, and his father's house, twenty-two captains. 29 And of the Benjamites, the brethren of Saul, three thousand, and up to then the majority of them stayed loyal to the house of Sual. 30 And of the Ephraimites twenty thousand eight hundred, valiant warriors, reputable in the house of their fathers. 31 And the half-tribe of Manasseh eighteen thousand, designated by name, to come to make David king. 32 And of the tribe of Issachar, who had knowledge of the times and knew what Israel should do, their leaders were two hundred, and all their brethren at their command. 33 Of Zebulun, those who would go out to battle, skilled in warfare with all the implements of war, fifty thousand, to help wholeheartedly. 34 And of Naphtali, a thousand captains, and with them with shield and spear thirty-seven thousand. 35 And of the Danites, skilled in warfare, twenty-eight thousand six hundred. 36 And of Asher, going forth to battle, skilled in war, forty thousand. 37 And on the other side of the Jordan, from the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh, with all the military gear for battle, one hundred and twenty thousand.
38 All these men of war came in battle array to Hebron with the sole purpose of making David king over all Israel, and also all the erst of Israel were united in their aim to make David king. 39 And they were there with David three days, eating and drinking, because their brothers had prepared for them. 40 And also those who were nearby, and as far as Issachar and Zebulun and Naphtali, brought bread on donkeys, and on camels, and on mules, and on oxen: food, flour, cakes of figs, cakes of raisins, and wine, and oil, and oxen, and sheep in great numbers, because there was rejoicing in Israel.
1 And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, with all the leaders. 2 And David said to all the assembly of Israel, If it seems good to you, and from Yahweh our god, let us send abroad to our remaining brothers who are left throughout all the lands of Israel, and with them the priests and the Levites in the cities of their hinterlands, and let them be gathered to us. 3 And let us bring back the ark of our god to us, because we did not inquire of it in the days of Saul. 4 And all the congregation agreed, because this thing seemed good in the view of all the people.
5 And David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt to Lebo Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath Jearim. 6 And David went up with all Israel to Baalah, to Kiriath Jearim, which belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which sits among the cherubim, where his name is called. 7 And they carried the ark of God in a new cart from the house of Abinadab, and Uzza and Ahio drove the cart. 8 And David and all Israel danced before god with all their strength, and with singing, and with lyres, and with harps, and with tambourines, and with with cymbals, and with trumpets.
9 And they came to the threshingfloor of Chidon, and Uzza reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10 And the wrath of Yahweh burned hot against Uzza, and he struck him, because he put his hand on the ark, and there he died before God. 11 And David was angry because of Yahweh's outburst against Uzza, and the place is called Perez Uzza to this day. 12 And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How can I bring the ark of God to myself?
13 And David did not bring the ark to himself in the City of David, but moved it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 14 And the ark of God remained with the house of Obed Edom in his house three months. And Yahweh blessed the house of Obed-Edom, and all that he had.
1 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar timber, and stone-workers and wood-workers, to built a house for him. 2 And David knew that Yahweh had established him as king over Israel, because his kingdom was exalted, for the sake of his people Israel.

8 And the Philistines heard that David was anointed as king over all Israel, and all the Philistines went up to find David. And David heard, and went out against them. 9 And the Philistines came and spread themselves across the valley of Rephaim. 10 And David inquired of God, saying, Should I go up against the Philistines? And will you deliver them into my hand?
And Yahweh said to him, Go up, and I will deliver them into your hand.
11 And they came to Baal Perazim, and David struck them down there. And David said, God has burst out against my enemies by my hand like floodwaters bursting out. There is why they called the name of the place Baal Perazim.12 And when they had abandoned their gods there, David gave the word, and they were burned with fire.
13 And yet again Philistines spread themselves across the valley. 14 And again David inquired of God, and God said to him, Do not go up after them. Turn away from them, and come upon them over by the balsam trees.15 And then, when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, because Yahweh has gone out before you to strike the Philistine camp. 16 And David did as God commanded him, and they struck the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. 17 And David's reputation spread out to all lands, and Yahweh brought the fear of him on all the peoples.
1 And David made himself houses in the City of David, and prepared a place for the ark of God, and pitched a tent for it. 2 Then David said, None is to carry the ark of God but the Levites, because Yahweh has chosen them to carry the ark of Yahweh, and to minister to it forever. 3 And David gathered all Israel together to Jerusalem, to bring up the ark of Yahweh to its place which he had prepared for it. 4 And David assembled the sons of Aaron, and the Levites: 5 of the sons of Kohath, Uriel the chief, and his brethren, one hundred and twenty; 6 of the sons of Merari, Asaiah the chief, and his brethren, two hundred twenty; 7 of the sons of Gershom, Joel the chief, and his brethren, one hundred thirty; 8 of the sons of Elizaphan, Shemaiah the chief, and his brethren, two hundred; 9 of the sons of Hebron, Eliel the chief, and his brethren, eighty; 10 of the sons of Uzziel, Amminadab the chief, and his brethren, one hundred twelve.
11 And David called for Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, and for the Levites, for Uriel, Asaiah, Joel, Shemaiah, and Eliel, and Amminadab. 12 And he said to them, You are the paternal heads of the Levites. Sanctify yourselves and your brethren, and bring up the ark of Yahweh, the god of Israel, to the place I have prepared for it. 13 Because you did not do it at first, Yahweh our god burst out against us, because we did not inquire of him correctly.
14 And the priests and the Levites consecrated themselves to bring up the ark of Yahweh, the god of Israel. 15 And the sons of the Levites carried the ark of God as Moses commanded by direction of Yahweh, with its poles upon their shoulders.
16 And David told to the captains of the Levites to appoint their brethren as singers with musical instruments, harps, and lyres, and cymbals, sounding, lifting up their voices with joy. 17 And the Levites appointed Heman son of Joel, of his brethren, Asaph son of Berechiah; and of the sons of Merari, their brethren, Ethan son of Kushaiah.18 And with them were their brethren second [in rank]: Zechariah, Ben, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obed Edom, and Jeiel, the gatekeepers; 19 and the singers Heman, Asaph, and Ethan, to sound with cymbals of bronze; 20 and Zechariah, and Aziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, and Eliab, and Maaseiah, and Benaiah, with harps on Alamoth; 21 and Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obed Edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with lyres on the Sheminith to lead. 22 And Chenaniah, captain of the Levites, was over the music. He instructed concerning the music, because he was skillful. 23 And Berechiah and Elkanah were gatekeepers for the ark. 24 And Shebaniah, and Joshaphat, and Nethaneel, and Amasai, and Zechariah, and Benaiah, and Eliezer, the priests, played the trumpets before the ark of God. And Obed Edom and Jehiah were gatekeepers of the ark.
25 And then David, and the elders of Israel, and the captains of thousands, went to bring up the ark of the covenant of God from the house of Obed-Edom with rejoicing. 26 And then, when God helped the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, they offered seven bulls and seven rams. 27 And David was clothed in a robe of fine linen, and all the Levites who carried the ark, and the singers, and Chenaniah the director of music with the singers. And David was wearing an ephod of linen. 28 And all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of Yahweh with shouting, and with the sound of the shofar, and with trumpets, and with cymbals, sounding on harps and lyres.
29 And then as the ark of the covenant of Yahweh came to the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out the window and saw King David leaping and dancing, and she felt contempt for him.
1 And they brought the ark of God, and set it in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it, and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God. 2 And David finished the burnt offerings and peace offerings, and he blessed the people in the name of Yahweh. 3 And he apportions to each Israelites, both men and women, to each a loaf of bread, an eshpar, and a cake of raisins. 4 And he placed some of the Levites before the ark of Yahweh to minister, and to memorialize, and to thank and praise Yahweh, the god of Israel: 5 Asaph the leader, and after him Zechariah, and Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obed Edom, and Jeiel with harps and lyres, and Asaph sounded the cymbals. 6 And Benaiah and Jahaziel, the priests with trumpets, were continually before the ark of the covenant of God.
7 Then on that day David first directed that thanksgiving be given to Yahweh by the hand of Asaph and his brethren.
8 Give thanks to Yahweh; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples. 9 Sing to him; intone to him; preach of all his wonders. 10 Glory in his holy name; rejoice, O heart that seeks Yahweh. 11 Seek Yahweh and his strength; seek his face always. 12 Remembers the wonders he has done, his marvels, his spoken judgments; 13 you seed of Israel his servant, sons of Jacob, his chosen. 14 He is Yahweh our god; throughout the earth his judgments are. 15 Remember forever his covenant, the word he commanded to a thousand generations, 16 which he made with Abraham, and his oath to Isaac. 17 And he confirmed it to Jacob as law, to Israel, an eternal covenant, 18 saying, I give you Canaan's land, your lot to inherit, 19 when you were a little, a few, and strangers there. 20 They wandered from country to country, from kingdom to nation. 21 He let none harm him; he chastised kings for you. 22 Touch not my anointed, and do my prophets no ill. 23 Sing to Yahweh, all the earth; announce his victory day to day. 24 Recount his glory among the nations; his wonders among the peoples; 25 for great is Yahweh, and greatly to be praised, a terror above all gods. 26 For the gods of the peoples are nothing, and Yahweh made the sky. 27 Glory and splendor are before him, strength and joy are with him. 28 Ascribe to Yahweh, families of nations, ascribe to Yahweh glory and strength. 29 Ascribe to Yahweh the glory of his name. Bring an offering, and come before him; worship Yahweh in the splendid sanctuary. 30 Tremble before him, all the earth. The world is established; it cannot be moved. 31 Let sky be glad, and earth rejoice, and men say among the nations, Yahweh is king. 32 Let sea roar, and its fulness, let fields rejoice, and all therein. 33 Then let forest trees sing out at Yahweh's presence as he comes to judge the earth. 34 Give thanks to Yahweh, for he is good, for his faithfulness is forever. 35 And say, Save us, god of our salvation, and gather us and deliver us from the nations, to give thanks to your holy name, to commend you with praise. 36 Blessed be Yahweh, god of Israel, from eternity to eternity.
And all the people said, Amen, and praised Yahweh.
37 And he left Asaph and his brethren there before the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, to minister before the ark continually, day by day; 38 and Obed Edom and and sixty eight of their brethren -- Obed Edom son of Jedithun and Hosah served as gatekeepers -- 39 and Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the dwelling-place of Yahweh at the shrine which was at Gibeon, 40 to offer burnt offerings to Yahweh on the altar of burnt offering continually, morning and evening, and according to all that is written in the law of Yahweh, which he commanded Israel. 41 And with them were Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest who were chosen, who were designated by name, to give thanks to Yahweh, because his faithfulness is eternal. 42 And with them were Heman and Jeduthun to sound trumpets and cymbols, and musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun were gatekeepers.
43 And all the people left, each man to his house, and David turned back to bless his own house.
1 Now, as David sat in his house, David said to Nathan the prophet, Look how I live in a house of cedar, while the ark of the covenant of Yahweh is beneath tent-curtains.
2 And Nathan said to David, Do all that is in your heart, because God is with you.
3 But that very night the word of Yahweh came to Nathan, saying, 4 Go and tell David my servant, Thus says Yahweh, You shall not build me a house to dwell in, 5 because I have not lived in a house from the day that I brought up Israel to the present day, but have gone from tent to tent, and from dwelling-place. 6 Wherever I have travelled with all Israel, did I ever say a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, saying, Why have you not built me a house of cedars? 7 So now, then, say to my servant David, Thus says Yahweh of Armies: I took you from the pasture, from following sheep, to be ruler over my people Israel. 8 And I have been with you wherever you walked, and have cut off all your enemies before you, and have made your name like the name of the great ones of the earth. 9 And I will set a place for my people Israel, and I will plant them, and they will dwell there, and be disturbed no more. And no longer will the sons of oppression consume them any more, as before, 10 and since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies, and I declare to you that Yahweh will build you a house. 11 And when you have lived a full life and pass on to be with your fathers, I will raise up your seed after you, who will be one of your sons, and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He will build me a house, and I will secure his throne forever. 13 I will become his father, and he will before my son, and I will not turn my loyalty away from him, as I did to the one before you. 14 And I will set him in my house and in my kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.
15 According to all these things, and according to all this prophetic vision, Nathan spoke to David.
16 And King David came and sat before Yahweh, and said, Who am I, Yahweh God, and what is my house, that you have brought me here. 17 And this was a too little in your eyes, O God, and you have spoken concerning your servant's house into the distant future, and have looked upon me as one would a person of high station, O Yahweh God. 18 What more can David say to you for the honor of your servant? You know your servant. 19 Yahweh, for the sake of your servant, and of your own intention, you have done all this great thing to reveal your great deeds. 20 Yahweh, there is none like you, and there is no god beside you, considering all we have heard with our ears. 21 Is there a single nation in the earth like your people Israel, whom God went to rescue as his own people, to make a name for yourself of greatness and terror, driving out nations before your people whom you redeemed from Egypt? 22 And you made your people Israel your own people forever, and you, Yahweh, became their god.
23 Therefore, Yahweh, let the thing which you have spoken about your servant and about his house be made sure forever, and do as you have said. 24 And let it be made certain that your name be magnified forever, saying, Yahweh of Armies is the god of Israel. And let the house of David your servant be established before you. 25 Because you, my god, told your servant that you would build him a house. Therefore your servant has taken it upon himself to pray before you. 26 And now, Yahweh, you are God, and have promised this good thing to your servant. 27 So let it please you to bless the house of your servant, to stand before you forever, because you have blessed, O Yahweh, and it will be blessed forever.
1 And it happened after this that David defeated the Philistines, and subdued them, and took Gath and its daughter-villages from the hand of the Philistines. 2 And he defeated Moab, and the Moabites became David's servants, and brought tribute.
3 And David defeated Hadarezer king of Zobah as far as Hamath, as he went to establish his rule at the river Euphrates. 4 And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. And David hamstrung all the horses, but kept enough of them for one hundred chariots.
5 And Aram Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, and David killed twenty-two thousand men of Aram. 6 And David placed [garrisons] in Aram Damascus, and Aram became servants of David, bearing tribute. And Yahweh gave David victory wherever he went. 7 And David took the shields of gold which were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 And from Tibhath, and from Chun, cities of Hadadezer, David brought a great deal of bronze, with which Solomon made the bronze sea, and the pillars, and the implements of bronze.
9 And Tou king of Hamath heard that David had struck all the forces of Hadadezer king of Zobah. 10 And he sent his son Hadoram to King David, to greet him and bless him for fighting with Hadadezer and defeating him, because Hadadezer had been a military opponent of Tou. And he brought with him all kinds of objects of gold, and silver, and bronze. 11 King David consecrated them to Yahweh, with the silver and the gold which he brought from all the nations: from Edom, and from Moab, and from the Ammonites, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.
12 And Abshai son of Zeruiah struck down eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt. 13 And he placed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David's servants. And Yahweh gave David victory wherever he went.
14 And David reigned over all Israel, and executed justice and decency for all his people. 15 And Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was the recorder. 16 And Zadok son of Ahitub, and Abimelech son of Abiathar, were the priests, and Shavsha was the scribe. 17 And Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites, and the sons of David were his chief agents.
1 Now after this, Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son reigned in his place. 2 And David said, I will deal loyally with Hanun son of Nahash, because his father dealt loyally with me. And David sent messengers with condolences concerning his father. And the servants of David came to the land of the Ammonites to Hanun, to comfort him.
3 And the nobles of the Ammonites said to Hanun, Do you think it is to honor your father that David sent comforters to you? Are his servants not here to investigate, and overthrow, and spy out the land?
4 And Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the middle by their buttocks, and sent them off. 5 And people came and told David about the men. And David sent men to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Stay at Jericho until your bears have grown, and then return.
6 And the Ammonites saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire themselves chariots and horsemen from Aram Naharaim, and from Aram Maachah, and from Zobah. 7 And they hired thirty-two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, and they camp and encamped in front of Medeba. And the Ammonites gathered themselves from their cities, and came to battle.
8 And David heard, and he sent Joab, and all the army of warriors. 9 And the Ammonites came out, and arrayed themselves for battle at the entrance of the city, and the kings who had come were by themselves in the field.
10 And Joab saw that the battle was the front lines were both before and behind him, he chose some of all the choicest of Israel, and set them in array against Aram. 11 And the rest of the people he placed under the command of Abshai his brother, and they arrayed themselves against the Ammonites. 12 And he said, If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you will come to my aid; and if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to your aid. 13 Be strong, and let us strengthen ourselves for the sake of our people, and for the cities of our god, and may Yahweh do as what is good in his eyes.
14 And Joab and the people with him approached Aram for battle, and they fled before them. 15 And the Ammonites saw that Aram had fled, and they also fled before Abshai his brother, and entered the city. And Joab came to Jerusalem.
16 And when the Syrians saw that they were defeated before Israel, they sent messengers and brought out the Arameans who were across the river, and Shophak, the general of Hadadezer's army, lead them. 17 And it was reported to David, and he gathered all Israel, and crossed over the Jordan, and came upon them, and arrayed his forces against the Syrians, and fought with them. 18 And Aram fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand charioteers and forty thousand foot soldiers. And he killed Shophak, the captain of the army. 19 And the servants of Hadadezer saw that they were defeated before Israel, and they made peace with David, and served him. And the Arameans refused to aid the Ammonites any more.
1 Now, in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, Joab lead the armed forces, and destroyed the land of the Ammonites, and came and besieged Rabbah. And David stayed at Jerusalem. And Joab struck Rabbah and destroyed it. 2 And David took the crown of their king from on his head, and found it to weigh a talent of gold, and there were precious stones on it. And it was on the head of David, and he took a very great deal of plunder from the city. 3 And he brought out the people who were in it, and forced them to labor with saws, and with iron pickaxes, and with saws. This is how David dealt with all the Ammonite towns. And David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.
4 Now, after this, a war arose at Gezer with the Philistines. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Sippai, of the children of the Rephaim, and they were subdued.
5 And again there was war with the Philistines, and Elhanan son of Jair killed Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam.
6 And again there was war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, with twenty-four digits, six on each [hand and foot]. And he also was born of the Rapha. 7 And when he spoke contemptuously of Israel, Jonathan son of Shimea, David's brother, killed him.
8 These were born to the giant in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David, and by the hand of his servants.
1 And a satan stood against Israel, and incited David to take a census of Israel. 2 And David said to Joab, and to the military commanders, Go take a count of Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, and come back and inform me about the number.
3 And Joab said, May Yahweh increase his people a hundredfold! But my lord the king, are they not all the servants of my lord? Why does my lord want this thing? Why should he bring guilt upon Israel?
4 But the king's word was too strong for Joab. And Joab went out, and travelled through all Israel, and came to Jerusalem. 5 And Joab gave the total count of the people to David. And all Israel were a million and one hundred thousand men who drew the sword, and Judah was four hundred seventy thousand men who drew the sword. 6 But he did not number Levi and Benjamin among them, because the king's command was detestable to Joab.
7 And this thing was evil in the eyes of God, and he struck Israel. 8 And David said to God, I have surely sinned greatly by doing this thing. So please, overlook the guilt of your servant, because I have acted very recklessly.
9 And Yahweh spoke to Gad, David's seer of visions, saying, 10 Go and tell David, Thus says Yahweh, I offer you three things. Choose one of them, and I will do it to you.
11 And Gad came to David, and said to him, Thus says Yahweh, Choose for yourself: 12 either three years of famine, or three months fleeing from your enemies as the sword of your enemies overtakes you, or else three days of the sword of Yahweh and plague in the land, and an angel of Yahweh destroying throughout all the territory of Israel. So consider which message I should bring back to the one who sent me.
13 And David said to Gad, I am in a difficult position. Let me fall into the hand of Yahweh, because his mercies are great, but do not let me fall into the hand of man.
14 And Yahweh sent a plague upon Israel, and seventy thousand Israelite men fell. 15 And God sent an angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, and as it was destroying, Yahweh saw, and regretted the disaster, and said to the destroying angel, Enough! Now withdraw your hand. And the angel of Yahweh stood by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel standing between earth and sky, with his sword drawn in his hand, stretched out over Jerusalem. And David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell on their faces. 17 And David said to God, Is it not I who commanded the counting of the people? It is I who have sinned and done evil. But these sheep -- what have they done? Please, let your hand be against me and against my father's house, but these people do not deserve to be plagued.
18 And the angel of Yahweh commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up to set up an altar to Yahweh at the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite. 19 And David went up, as Gad told him in the name of Yahweh. 20 And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel, and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat. 21 And David came to Ornan, and Ornan looked and saw David, and went out from the threshing-floor, and bowed to David face down.
22 And David said to Ornan, Give me the site of this threshing-floor, and I will build an altar here to Yahweh. Give it to me at full price, and the plague will be held back from the people.
23 And Ornan said to David, Take it for yourself, and let my lord the king do as he wishes. See, I will give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing-sledges for wood, and the wheat for the meal-offering. I give it all to you.
24 And the king said to Ornan, No, but I will buy it at full price, because I will not take what is yours for Yahweh, and offer burnt offerings at no cost. 25 And David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels' weight in gold.26 And there David built an altar to Yahweh, and offered burnt offerings and peace-offerings. And he called to Yahweh, and he answered him from the sky with fire upon the altar of burnt offering.
27 And Yahweh commanded the angel, and he put his sword into his sheath.
28 When David saw that Yahweh had answered him at the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he sacrificed there. 29 And the tabernacle of Yahweh, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering, where then at the shrine at Gibeon. 30 And David was unable to go before it to inquire of God, because he was afraid of the sword of the angel of Yahweh.
1 And David said, This is the house of Yahweh God, and this is the altar of burnt offering for Israel. 2 And David commanded that the aliens who lived in the land of Israel be gathered, and he appointed masons to cut the hewn stones to built the house of God. 3 And David prepared an abundance of iron for nails for the doors of the gates, and for the fittings, and more brass than could be weighed, 4 and a limitless quantity of cedar wood, because the Sidonians and the Tyrians brought a great deal of cedar to David.
5 And David said, Solomon my son is young and tender, and the house to be build for Yahweh must be of enormous size, famous and splendid to all lands. So I will prepare for it. And David prepared abundantly before his death.
6 And he called for Solomon his son, and commanded him to build a house for Yahweh, the god of Israel. 7 And David said to Solomon his son, I had intended to build a house for the name of Yahweh, my god. 8 But a message from Yahweh came to me: You have spilled much blood, and carried out great battles. You will not build a house for my name, because you have shed much blood on the earth before me. 9 Yet a son will be born to you, who will be a peaceable man, and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about, so that his name will be Solomon, and I will give peace and quiet to Israel in his days.10 He will build a house for my name, and he will be my son, and I will be his father, and I will establish the throne of his kingship over Israel forever. 11 Now, my son, may Yahweh be with you, and give you success, and may you build the house of Yahweh your god, as he promised concerning you. 12 Only may Yahweh give you wisdom and understanding, and command you concerning Israel, to keep the law of Yahweh your god. 13 Then you will have success, if you keep and observe the statutes, and the judgments which Yahweh commanded Moses concerning Israel. Be strong, and of good courage. Do not fear or be dismayed. 14 And see, I have taken pains to prepare for the house of Yahweh one hundred talents of gold, and one million talents of silver, and brass and iron beyond measure, because it is an abundance. And I have prepared timber and stone, and you will add to it. 15 And there are many workmen with you, hewers of stone and timber, and all those skilled in every craft. 16 Of gold, and of silver, and of bronze, and of iron there is no measuring. Arise, and do it, and may Yahweh be with you.
17 And David commanded all the nobles of Israel to help Solomon his son: 18 Is Yahweh not with you? And has he not given you rest round about, because he has given the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and the land is subdued before Yahweh and before his people. 19 So set your heart and your soul to inquire of Yahweh your god. Arise, and build the sanctuary of Yahweh God, bringing the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and the holy things of God, to the house which will be built for the name of Yahweh.
1 And David was old, well on in years, he made Solomon his son king over Israel.
2 And he gathered all the nobles of Israel, and the priests and the Levites. 3 And the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and above, and the headcount was thirty-eight thousand. 4 Of these, twenty-four thousand were appointed over the work of the house of Yahweh, and six thousand were magistrates and judges. 5 And four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand praised Yahweh with instruments which I made for worship.
6 And David divided them into divisions by the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari. 7 And of the Gershonites, Laadan and Shimei. 8 The sons of Laadan: the first was Jehiel, and Zetham, and Joel: three. 9 The sons of Shimei: Shelomith, and Haziel, and Haran: three. These were the paternal heads of Laadan. 10 And the sons of Shimei: Jahath, Zina, and Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei. 11 And Jahath was the first, and Zizah the second, and Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons. Therefore they are counted as a single clan.
12 The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel: four. 13 The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses. And Aaron was separated to consecrate the holy of holies, he and his sons forever, to burn incense before Yahweh, to minister to him, and to bless his name forever. 14 And as for Moses the man of God, his sons were considered of the tribe of Levi. 15 The sons of Moses: Gershom and Eliezer. 16 The sons of Gershom: Shebuel the chief. 17 And the sons of Eliezer were Rehabiah the first. And Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very many. 18 The sons of Izhar: Shelomith the first. 19 The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jakmeam the fourth. 20 The sons of Uzziel: Micah the first, and Jishiah the second.
21 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli: Eleazar and Kish. 22 And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but only daughters, and the sons of Kish married them. 23 The sons of Mushi: Mahli, and Eder, and Jeremoth: three.
24 These are the sons of Levi by their paternal houses, the paternal heads, reckoned by the number of names in their headcount, who worked in the service of the house of Yahweh, from twenty years old and up.
25 For David said, Yahweh, the god of Israel, has given rest to his people, and they will dwell in Jerusalem forever. 26 And as for the Levites, they are no longer to carry the tabernacle, or any of the implements of its service. 27 For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from age twenty and up, 28 because it was their place to assist the Aaronites in the service of the house of Yahweh, concerning the courtyards, and concerning the chambers, and concerning the purification of all the sanctuary, and the work of the service of the house of God, 29 both for the arranged bread, and for the fine flour for the meal-offering, and for unleavened wafers, and for the cooking-pans, and for the mixtures, and for all measures of volume and size; 30 and to stand every morning to thank and praise Yahweh, and likewise in the evening; 31 and to offer all burnt offerings to Yahweh on sabbaths, on new moons, and on the festivals, by number, according to the prescribed method, continually before Yahweh. 32 And they were to keep the charge of the tent of meeting, and the charge of the sanctuary, and the charge of the sons of Aaron, their brothers, for the service of the house of Yahweh.
1 And the divisions of the sons of Aaron. The sons of Aaron: Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 2 And Nadab and Abihu died before their father, and had no children. And Eleazar and Ithamar were the priests. 3 And David divided them, both Zadok from the sons of Eleazar and Ahimelech from the sons of Ithamar, by their positions in their service.
4 And there were more significant leaders found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar, and so they were divided. Of the sons of Eleazar were sixteen leaders of paternal houses; and of the sons of Ithamar, by their paternal houses, eight. 5 And they were divided, these with those, because the commanders of the sanctuary, and the commanders of God, were from the sons of Eleazar and from the sons of Ithamar. 6 And Shemaiah son of Nethaneel the scribe, of the Levites, wrote them before the king and the commanders, and Zadok the priest, and Ahimelech son of Abiathar, and the paternal heads of the priests and Levites. In the fourtieth year of the kingship of David they were searched out, and were found among them, mighty warriors in Jazer of Gilead. 32 And his brethren, valiant men, two thousand and seven hundred paternal heads, and David the king placed them over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh for every matter pertaining to God, and matters pertaining to the king.

Of Benjamin, Jaasiel son of Abner. 22 Of Dan, Azarel son of Jeroham. These were the commanders of the tribes of Israel.
23 And David did not take their number from twenty years and upward, because Yahweh said he would increase Israel like the stars of the sky. 24 Joab son of Zeruiah began to count, but he did not finish, because it caused wrath to fall upon Israel, and the number was not put in the account of the annals of King David.
25 And over the king's treasuries was Azmaveth son of Adiel. And over the treasuries in the fields, in the cities, and in the villages, and in the fortresses, was Jonathan son of Uzziah. 26 And over those who worked cultivating the fields was Ezri son of Chelub. 27 And over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite. And over the donkeys was Jehdaiah the Meronothite. 31 And over the sheep was Jaziz the Hagrite. All these were stewards of the King David's property. 32 And Jonathan, David's uncle, was an advisor, a wise man and a scribe. Jehiel son of Hachmoni was with the king's sons. 33 And Ahithophel was the king's advisor. And Hushai the Archite was the king's friend. 34 And after Ahithophel was Jehoiada son of Benaiah, and Abiathar. And the commander of the king's army was Joab.
1 And David assembled all the commanders of Israel, the commanders of the tribes, and the commanders of the divisions that ministered to the king, and the commanders of thousands, and the commanders of hundreds, and the stewards of all the king's property, and of his sons, with the officers, and with the warriors, and of all the valiant warriors, to Jerusalem.
2 And David the king stood up on his feet, and said, Hear me, my brothers and my people. I intended to build a house of rest for the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and for the footstool of our god, and I prepared for building. 3 But God said to me, You will not build a house for my name, because you are a man of war, and have shed blood. 4 And Yahweh, the god of Israel, chose me among all my father's house to be king over Israel forever, because he has chosen Judah for the ruler, of the house of Judah, the house of my father. And among the sons of my father he desired to make me king over all Israel. 5 And of all my sons, for Yahweh has given me many sons, he has chosen Solomon my son to sit on the throne of the kingdom of Yahweh over Israel. 6 And he said to me, Solomon my son is the one who will build my house and my courtyards, because I have chosen him as my son, and I will be his father. 7 And I will establish his kingdom forever, if he is strong in carrying out my commands and my customs, as at this day. 8 So, in the eyes of all Israel, the assembly of Yahweh, and in the ears of God, keep and investigate all the commands of Yahweh your god, in order that you may possess this good land, and leave it as an inheritance for your children after you forever. 9 And you, Solomon my son, know the god of your father, and serve him wholeheartedly, and with delight in your soul, because Yahweh searches all hearts, and knows every thought. If you seek him, you will find him, but if you abandon him he will reject you forever. 10 Take care now, because Yahweh has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary. Be strong and do it.
11 And David gave Solomon his son the plan for the portico, and its houses, its storehouses, and its upper rooms, and its inner chambers, and the house of the ark's lid. 12 And he had the pattern for it all by the spirit, of the courtyards of the house of Yahweh, and of all the chambers surrounding it, of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries of holy things. 13 And for the divisions of the priests and the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of God, and for all the implements of the service of Yahweh. 14 For gold, gold was weighed out for all the implements of every kind of service. For all the implements of silver by weight, and for all the implements of every kind of service. 15 And the weight of the lampstands of gold, and the lamps of gold, by weight for every lampstand, and for its lamps, and for the lampstands of silver by weight. For the lampstand and its lamps, for the use of every lampstand. 16 And by weight gold for the tables of the arranged bread for every table, and silver for the silver tables. 17 And the forks, and the basins, and the pitchers were pure gold. And for the gold dishes by weight for each dish, and by weight for every silver dish. 18 And for the altar of incense refined gold by weight, and gold for the plan of the chariot of the cherubim that spread [their wings] and overshadowed the ark of the covenant of Yahweh. 19 All this, in writing, by the hand of Yahweh upon me, he made me understand all the work of this pattern.
20 And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and brave, and do it. Do not be afraid, or dismayed, because Yahweh God, my god, is with you. He will not fail you or abandon you before you have finished all the work for the service of the house of Yahweh. 21 And know that the divisions of the priests and the Levites will be with you for all the service of the house of God, and for all kinds of work every willing skillful man with me with you for any kind of service, and the officials and all the people will follow your orders.
1 And David the king said to all the assembly, Solomon my son, the one whom God has chosen, is young and tender, and the work is great, because the palace is not for a human being, but for God. 2 And with all my might I have prepared for the house of my god the gold for the golden things, the silver for the silver things, the bronze for the bronze things, the iron for the iron things, the timber for the wooden things, the shoham stones, and [the stones] to be set [in the ephod], stones of antimony, colored stones, and every sort of precious stone, and an abundance of marble. 3 Moreover, in my zeal for the house of my god, I have of my own property gold and silver. I have given it to the house of my god, in addition to all that I have prepared for the holy house: 4 three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses; 5 the gold for the gold things, the silver for the silver things, and for all kinds of work by the hands of craftsmen. And who then is willing to volunteer to consecrate his service today to Yahweh.
6 And the clan leaders and nobles of the tribes of Israel, and commanders of thousands and hundreds, and the commanders of the kings business, volunteered. 7 And they gave for the service of the house of God gold, five thousand talents and ten thousand darics, and silver, ten thousand talents, and brass, eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. 8 And those had stones gave them to the treasury of the house of Yahweh by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. 9 And the peoples rejoiced that they had volunteered, because wholeheartedly they volunteered for Yahweh, and David the king rejoices with great joy.
10 And David blessed Yahweh in the sight of all the assembly, and David said, Blessed art thou, Yahweh, god of Israel, our father, from eternity to eternity. 11 Yours, Yahweh, is the greatness, and the power, and the splendor, and the victory, and the majesty, because all that is in sky and earth is yours, Yahweh, and you are exalted as head above all. 12 Both riches and honor are from before you, and you reign over all, and in your hand is the power to make great, and to give strength to all. 13 And so, our god, we thank you, and praise your splendid name. 14 But who am I, and who is this people, to be able to offer like this? Because all things come from you, and from your own hand we have given to you. 15 For we are foreigners before you, and sojourners, like all our fathers. Our days on the earth are as a shadow, without hope.
16 Yahweh our god, all this abundance that we have prepared to built you a house for your holy name is from your own hand, and is all your own. 17 And I know, my god, that you examine hearts, and take pleasure in righteousness. As for me, in the righteousness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things, and now I have seen with joy your people, who are present here to give generously with gladness. 18 Yahweh, god of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, guard this forever in the thoughts of the heart of your people, and prepare their heart for you. 19 And give Solomon my son a whole heart to keep your commandments, and your regulations, and your statutes, and to do it all, and to build the palace for which I have made provision.
20 And David said to all the assembly, Bless Yahweh your god. And all the assembly blessed the Yahweh, the god of their fathers, and bowed their heads, and did homage to Yahweh and the king.
21 And they offered sacrifices to Yahweh, and offered burnt offerings to Yahweh on the next day, a thousand bulls, and a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel. 22 And they ate and drank before Yahweh on that day with great rejoicing. And they made Solomon the son of David king for a second time, and anointed him to Yahweh as ruler, and Zadok as priest. 23 And Solomon sat on the throne of Yahweh as king instead of David his father, and all Israel obeyed him. 24 And all the commanders, and the warriors, and all the sons of King David gave their allegiance to Solomon the king. 25 And Yahweh exalted Solomon in the eyes of all Israel, and granted him royal majesty had not been upon any king before him over Israel.
26 So David the son of Jesse had ruled over all Israel. 27 And the days that he reigned over Israel were forty years. In Hebrew he reigned seven years, and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty-three. 28 And he died in a good old age, full of days, wealth, and honor. And Solomon his son reigned in his place. 29 And the deeds of David the king, first and last, are indeed written in the words of Samuel the seer, and in the words of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the visionary, 30 with all his reign and his might, and the times that passed over him, and over Israel, and over all the surrounding kingdoms.
