Translation:Shulchan Aruch/Yoreh Deah/42
Contains nine Seif 1editIf the Marah, gall bladder, is pierced it's treif. But if it's pierced facing the liver and the liver seals it - it's kosher.
2editIf it was removed by action or it's missing, it's treif. 3editIf the gall bladder is missing, he tears the liver in a crosshatch pattern and tastes it with his tongue. If he tastes bitterness it's kosher, but if he doesn't taste bitterness, he roasts it on embers and tastes it and if it contains a bitter taste it's kosher, and if not it's treif.
4editIf there are two gall bladders it's treif, because it's like it's missing. And if it's one but appears like two, we pierce one and if one flows to the other it's one and it's kosher, and if not then they are two and it's treif. 5editIf they pierced it and they don't flow to each other, but then they inflated one of them and the other one also rose from the inflating, or they introduced water into one of them and it caused the other one to also fill with water - it's kosher. 6editEven if they're two whole gall bladders except that where they're attached to the liver by like a thumbwidth they're like one - it's kosher, even if they don't flow to each other. The same rule applies if they begin as two but are conjoined at the end as one - it's kosher. 7editIf there were two gall bladders on the liver, one here and one there, but one duct flows to both of them, then if when a person straightens one of them the juice flows to the place where the duct splits the gall and flows to both of them, but when they're lying like their position during the beast's life they don't flow to each other - a beast of an Yisrael can be ruled kosher.
8editThere are some species of birds that have no gall bladder such as doves and pigeons, and they should not be forbidden since the whole species is like that. Also the deer has no gall bladder on its liver but it has one below close to its tail.
9editA seed (stone?) found in the gall bladder, if it's as a date pit which doesn't have have a sharp point - it's permitted. But if its point is sharp like an olive pit - it's forbidden, because behold it pierced it when it entered, and the hole is invisible because the wound entry got sealed.
