Ludwig Tieck's novella The Mysterious Individual (Der Geheimnißvolle) was written in 1821 and first published by Hilscher in Dresden in 1822. It was serialized in the journal Merkur between 3 January (Number 1) and 28 February (Number 25), edited by Ferdinand Philippi.
