Uncle William: The Man Who Was Shif'less (1906)
by Jennette Lee, illustrated by Frederic Dorr Steele

Edition: New York: A. L. Burt Co., 1906. Previously published as a novelette, “Uncle William: The story of an ill wind which blew him much good” in Collier's, 9 Dec 1905.

Uncle William is another character sketch by Jennette Lee. It is also a story. One of the old once-upon-a-timey stories where the runaway boy comes home a millionaire and makes every one happy. Yet it has a feel of out-of-doors about it all, and Uncle William, who is shif’less and lives by the sea up Nova Scotia way, and Andy, who isn’t shif’less and lives near him, are both worth meeting. —J. B. Kerfoot in Life, 19 April 1906

TO

GERALD STANLEY LEE

Let him sing to me
Who sees the watching of the stars above the day,
Who hears the singing of the sunrise
On its way
Through all the night.

******
Let him sing to me
Who is the sky-voice, the thunder-lover,
Who hears above the winds’ fast flying shrouds
The drifted darkness, the heavenly strife,
The singing on the sunny sides of all the clouds
Of his own life.”
