Ivanhoe
editI am a graduate of Western Washington University, with a major in economics. Eventually I plan to work toward a Master of Library and Information Science degree. I am fascinated with projects like Wikisource, Project Gutenberg, Marxists Internet Archive, and the Library of Congress that make primary sources freely available on the Internet. I currently live and work in Vancouver, British Columbia, where I also volunteer at Spartacus Books, a non-profit, non-sectarian radical bookstore.
I registered for Wikisource on 21 December, 2006, after having done some minor cleanup and making my first full contribution as an unregistered user. That contribution was the Floor Statement of Senator Gordon Smith on Iraq, after having watched the speech on C-SPAN and finding it worth reprinting.
I started adding New York Times articles as free time permitted. To date, I have contributed these:
- London Attacked by Airmen
- The Rio Grande Frontier
- Blind in Left Eye, Roosevelt Admits
- Washington. Reports of the Judiciary Committee on Impeachment
- Earthquake in Naples
- Biologist Denies Chance Evolution
- Lights All Askew in the Heavens
- The Screen (film reviews for The Mark of Zorro and Heliotrope)
- Flesh Descending in a Shower
I also contributed one article to the 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica:
Other additions include:
- The Farce of Sodom, or The Quintessence of Debauchery, an early erotic play attributed to John Wilmot
- The first issue of the Boston News-Letter, the first regularly published American newspaper
- H. RES. 224 Supporting the designation of Pi Day, and for other purposes
- An Essay in Defence of the Female Sex by Judith Drake, the 3rd edition of her 1696 feminist essay
- "Women and Birth-Control", an essay by F. W. Stella Browne from the anthology Population and Birth-Control.
- Anglo-Saxon Riddles of the Exeter Book, a collection of Old English riddles with translation by Paull F. Baum. (I also created a portal for all the works found in the Exeter Book, many of which were contributed by other users.)
- Ancient and Modern Pederasty Investigated and Exemplify’d, a pamphlet by Thomas Cannon credited as the earliest English-language written defence of homosexuality
- Presidential Address to the Nation on the situation in Syria, a 2013 speech by U.S. President Barack Obama
- Floor Statement of Representative Barbara Lee on the Authorization for Use of Military Force, the only floor statement in opposition to a bill giving sweeping authority to the President of the United States to prosecute the "War on Terror"
In addition to my Wikisource transcriptions, I have received permission from Freedom Press to reproduce issues of Anarchy, a UK-based monthly magazine. This is by far my most ambitious project to date and it can be viewed here.
