User:Pathoschild/Projects/Standardised header

Pathoschilduserspace map ] (Project Standardised header
This project documents the transition from myriad header and navigation templates, most carried over from other projects or improvised, to a single standardised template. The template was developed with discussion ("Standardised page infobox", WikiProject IGD) 21 January 2006, and implemented 26 January 2006 following a unanimous vote ("Standardised article header", Scriptorium).

Before standardisation edit

Byline method edit

This was usually written manually, but the {{byline}} template was occasionally used as well. Several variations existed, as listed.

  1. < Fyodor Dostoevsky
  2. by Fyodor Dostoevsky
  3. Crime and Punishment
    by Fyodor Dostoevsky
  4. <Fyodor Dostoevsky
    Crime and Punishment

Navigator templates edit

The navigator templates, used on roughly 40 pages, did not allow empty parameters. They used multiple templates to cope with different situations. In order, the templates below are {{NavigatorBegin}} and {{Navigator}}.

Crime and Punishment >> Part I

Part I << Crime and Punishment >> Part III

{{Navigation}}

The {{Navigation}} template, used on roughly 10 pages, used the conditional programming template {{HideIfEmpty}} to hide the next and back links if they were undefined. This template depended on the title format "Title/section", which was not common at the time. It did not allow custom naming of the next and back links.

Chap templates edit

The chap templates, used on over 100 pages (over 700 pages in the case of {{Chapter_foot}}), also used {{HideIfEmpty}} . The template depended on the title format "Title: Chapter X" (exclusively "Chapter"), which was somewhat common among books. An alternative template, {{chap_simple}} , was created for works that didn't use that title format. In order, the templates below are {{Chap}} , {{Chap_simple}} , and {{Chapter_foot}} .

< Chapter 1 Little Women by Louisa May Alcott Chapter 3 >

< Prior Ballad Ballads of a Cheechako by Robert W. Service Next Ballad >

< Prior chapter Chapter title Next chapter >
none Start in Life Slavery and Escape

Proposals

Initial proposal edit

The initial proposal was based on the Chap templates1. They used blank default values to hide parameters that were left undefined, and a parameter for editorial notes.

Other sections: Translator's Preface | Part I | Part II | Part III | Part IV | Part V | Part VI | Epilogue

Final proposal edit

The final proposal used a colour scheme that was previously unused on Wikisource. The notes parameter was redesigned to minimise the appearance of stacked boxes. As of 16 September 2006, this template was used on 29826 pages.
