Welcome to WikiProject Appletons'.
Of about 20,000 entries, the Appletons' Cyclopædia included at least 200 entries for fictitious persons. See Wikipedia's article Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography for the full story. The entries here have been clearly marked as such when the fictitious status is known. Articles on Latin American subjects should be used cautiously until verified against other sources.
The articles of Appletons' Cyclopædia were based upon the information available to the editors and contributors at the time of their original publication in the late 19th century. More recent research may have rendered this information obsolete or revealed it to be inaccurate. In addition, lapses from neutrality of the contributors and editors and their political or social attitudes can introduce bias to the articles. Readers should bear this in mind when using the information.
These articles are transcribed from the originals by volunteers, sometimes directly and sometimes by correcting a preliminary OCR conversion. While we strive for perfect accuracy, there may be transcription errors in the articles.
