CAPUT XXV

Đys [godspel] sceal tō hāligra fǣmnena mæssedæge.

1. Þonne byþ heofena rīce gelīc þām tȳn fǣmnum þe ðā lēohtfatu nāmon, and fērdon ongēn þone brȳdguman and þā brȳde.[1]

2. Hyra fīf wǣron dysige, and fīf glēawe.[2]

3. Ac þā fīf dysegan nāmon lēohtfatu, and ne nāmon nānne ele mid hym;[3]

4. ðā glēawan nāmon ele on hyra fatum mid þām lēohtfatum.[4]

5. Đā sē brȳdguma ylde, þā hnappudon hig ealle and slēpun.[5]

6. Witodlīce tō middyre nihte man hrȳmde and cwæþ, Nū sē brȳdguma cymð; farað him tōgēnys.[6]

7. Þā āryson ealle þā fǣmnan, and glengdon heora lēohtfatu.[7]

8. Đā cwǣdon þā dysegan tō þām wīsum, Syllaþ ūs of ēowrum ele; for þām ūre lēohtfatu synt ācwencte.[8]

9. Đā andswarudun þā glēawan and cwǣdun, Nese, þē lǣs þe wē and gē nabbon genōh; gāþ tō þām cȳpendum, and bycgað ēow ele.[9]

10. Witodlīce þā hig fērdun and woldon bycgean, þā cōm sē brȳdguma; and þā ðe gearwe wǣrun ēodun in mid him tō þām gyftum; and sēo duru wæs belocyn.[10]

11. Đā æt nēhstan cōmon þā ōðre fǣmnan, and cwǣdun, Dryhtyn, Dryhtyn, lǣt ūs in.[11]

12. Đā andswarode hē heom and cwæð, Sōþ ic ēow secge, ne cann ic ēow.[12]

13. Witodlīce waciað, for þam ðe gē nyton nē þone dæg nē þā tīde.[13]

Đys godspel gebyrað on sancte Syluestres mæssedæge, and tō ōðra confessorum.

14. Sum mann fērde on elþēodignesse, and clypode hys þēowas, and betǣhte hym hys ǣhta.[14]

15. And ānum hē sealde fīf pund, sumum twā, sumum ān; ǣghwylcum be hys āgenum mægene; and fērde sōna.[15]

16. Đā fērde sē þe ðā fīf pund underfēng, and gestrȳnde ōþre fīfe.[16]

17. And eal swā sē ðe þā twā underfēng gestrȳnde ōðre twā.[17]

18. Witodlīce sē þe þæt ān underfēng fērde and bedēalf hyt on eorðan, and behȳdde hys hlāfurdes feoh.[18]

19. Witodlīce æfter miclum fyrste cōm þǣra þēowa hlāfurd, and dyhte hym gerād.[19]

20. Đā cōm sē þe ðā fīf pund underfēng, and brōhte ōþre fīfe, and cwæð, Hlāfurd, fīf pund þū sealdest mē; nū ic gestrȳnde ōðre fīfe.[20]

21. Đā cwæþ hys hlāford tō hym, Bēo blīþe, þū gōda þēow and getrȳwa; for þām ðe þū wǣre getrȳwe ofer lȳtle þing, ic gesette þē ofer mycle; gā intō þīnes hlāfordes blisse.[21]

22. Þā cōm sē þe þā twā pund underfēng, and cwæð, Hlāford, twā pund þū mē sealdest; nū ic hæbbe gestrȳnyd ōðre twā.[22]

23. Đā cwæð hys hlāford tō hym, Geblissa, þū gōda þēowa and getrȳwa; for þām ðe þū wǣre getrȳwe ofer fēawa, ofer fela ic ðē gesette; gā on þīnes hlāfordes gefēan.[23]

24. Đā cōm sē þe þæt ān pund underfēng, and cwæð, Hlāford, ic wāt þæt ðū eart heard mann; þū rīpst þǣr ðū ne sēowe, and gaderast þǣr ðū ne sprengdest:[24]

25. and ic fērde ofdrǣd, and behȳdde þīn pund on eorþan; hēr þū hæfst þæt ðīn ys.

26. Đā andswarode hys hlāford him and cwæþ, Þū yfela ðēow and slāwa, ðū wistest þæt ic rȳpe þǣr ic ne sāwe, and ic gaderige þǣr ic ne strēdde;[25]

27. hyt gebyrede þæt þū befæstest mīn feoh mynyterum; and ic nāme, þænne ic cōme, þæt mīn ys mid þām gafole.[26]

28. Ānymaþ þæt pund æt hym, and syllað þām þe mē ðā tȳn pund brōhte.

29. Witodlīce[27] ǣlcon þǣra þe hæfð man sylþ, and hē hæfð genōh; ðām þe næfð, þæt hym þincð þæt hē hæbbe, þæt hym byð ætbrōdyn.[28]

30. And wurpað þone unnyttan þēowan on þā ūttran þȳstru; þǣr byð wōp and tōþa grīstbitung.[29]

31. Witudlīce þonne mannes Sunu cymð on hys mægenþrymme, and ealle englas mid him, þonne sitt hē ofer hys mægenþrymmes setl.[30]

32. And ealle þēoda bēoþ tōforan hym gegaderude; and hē āsyndrað hī hym betwȳnan, swā swā sē hyrde āsyndraþ ðā scēp fram tyccenum;[31]

33. and hē gesett þā scēp on hys swīðran healfe, and þā tyccenu on hys wynsteran healfe.[32]

34. [Đonne cwið sē Cyning tō ðām þe on his swīðran healfe bēoð,] Cumað gē geblētsode mīnes Fæder, and onfōð þæt rīce þæt ēow gegearwod ys of middaneardes frymþe.[33]

35. Mē hingrode, and gē mē sealdon etan; mē þyrste, and gē mē sealdun drincan; ic wæs cuma, and gē mē in laþodon;[34]

36. ic wæs nacud, and gē mē scrȳddon; ic wæs untrum, and gē ēodun tō mē; ic wæs on cwearterne, and gē cōmon tō mē.[35]

37. Þonne andswariað þā rihtwīsan and cweþað, Drihten, hwænne gesāwe wē ðē hingrigendne, and wē ðē fēddon? þyrstendne, and wē ðē drinc sealdon?[36]

38. Hwænne gesāwe wē þæt ðū cuma wǣre, and þē in laþodon? oððe nacodne, and wē þē scrȳddon?[37]

39. [oððe hwænne gesāwon wē ðē untrumne,] oððe on cwearterne, and cōmon tō þē?[38]

40. Đonne andswarað sē Cyning hym and cwyþ tō heom, Sōþ ic ēow secge, Swā lange swā gē dydon ānum of ðysum mīnum lǣstum gebrōðrum, swā lange gē hyt dydon mē.[39]

41. Þonne segþ hē þām þe bēoð on hys wynstran healfe, Gewītað, āwyrgyde, fram mē on þæt ēce fȳr þe ys dēofle and hys englum gegearwud.[40]

42. Witodlīce mē hingryde, and gē ne sealdon mē etan; mē þyrste, and gē mē drincan ne sealdun;[41]

43. ic wæs cuma, and gē mē †in ne gelaþodun; ic wæs nacod, and gē ne scrȳddon mē; ic wæs untrum and on cwearterne, and gē ne cōmon æt mē.[42]

44. Đonne andswarigeaþ hym þā and cweðaþ, Dryhtyn, hwænne gesāwe wē þē hingrigendne, oððe þyrstendne, oðþe cuman, oððe untrumne, oþþe on cwearterne, and wē ne þēnedon þē?[43]

45. Þonne andswarað sē Cyning heom and cwyð, Sōþ ic ēow secge, Swā lange swā gē ne dydon ānum of þysum lǣstum, ne dyde gē hyt mē.[44]

46. And þonne farað hig on ēce sūsle; and þā rihtwīsan on þæt ēce līf.
