Style guide

Formatting

• WS:MOS is to be followed.
• This means “curly” ‘quotes’ are to be replaced with "straight" 'quotes'.
• The stress marker is a prime symbol ′ and not an apostrophe ' or ’!
  • Tip: use ′ to clearly identify the symbol for future editors.
• Use {{smaller block}} for text (generally quotations) that appears in a smaller font.
• Use {{center block}} and {{fqm}} as needed for text (generally poetic quotations) that are centered. The citation is generally floated right; use {{float right}}.
• Use a regular asterism ⁂ where you see what looks like an upside-down asterism (it's essentially a variant glyph for the same character).
• Use {{polytonic}} for Greek text, {{hebrew}} for any Hebrew text, and any other relevant template for other scripts.

Wikilinks

• Use {{BDPF article link}} and {{BDPF qv}} for links between articles.
• Long articles can have tables of contents; use {{anchor+}} to set them up - see Dog for an example.
• Do not add wikilinks within the text to pages outside of the Dictionary - unless you are willing to add all of them throughout the entire work.

Page titles

• A page title should consist of the word being defined. In general, it will be the same as the word(s) that are in bold.
• Do not inlude the stress marker in the page title!
• Don't include the final period or punctuation mark in the title unless it obviously is part of the term being defined.
• Words in parentheses following the word being defined may or may not belong in the title. If they are part of the term being defined, include them in the title. If not, omit them.
• Use your judgement for weird cases. See examples for precedent:
  • Joggis or Jogges - two bold words
  • John-a-Nokes
• Disambiguate pages with the same name using (1), (2), etc. (e.g. Jockey (1) and Jockey (2))

Tips for proofreading

• The text of this work is available at https://www.bartleby.com/81/ - you may find it easier to copy and paste from there rather than trying to use OCR or to decipher some of the less clear scan pages.
• When copying from Bartleby, be careful of some issues:
  • The Bartleby edition does have some typos.
  • Letters with accents are represented as images on Bartleby, and may disappear.
  • Asterisms ⁂ will also disappear when copy-pasted.
  • Bartleby uses curly quotes and apostrophes - these need to be replaced with straight ones (see Formatting, above)
  • Bartleby uses apostrophes to represent stress marks - these need to be replaced with the correct symbol ′.
• You may find commons:Commons:CropTool useful for the illustrations within the text.
