חטה, חיטה f. (b. h.; v. חנט) [the clean, bright,
cmp. נקיה פת, s. v. נקי,] wheat-grain, (collect.) wheat.
Midr. Till. to Ps. II, 12; Cant. R. to VII, 3 סדוקה זו ח׳ מה
as the wheat-grain is slit. Shebu. V, 3 ח׳ אמר if he
says hittah (in the sing.). Ib. 38a חטין בכלל ח׳ אפי׳ even
hittah means a quantity of wheat. Tosef. Ned. III, 7; Y.
ib. VI, end, 40a וכ׳ שאני חי׳ if one vows, l will not taste

חטחט, v. next w. חטט 1) to dig, cut out (of the sucket), hollow out. Mikv. IV, 3 וכ׳ בצינור החוטט if one makes a cavity in a water pipe for the deposit of pebbles. Gen. R. s. 34. וכ׳ את חוטט היה the embryo would cut its way through &c. Kidd. 24b וחטטה and he (the master) cut it(the eye) out. --- 2) to rake, clean a well. M. Kat. I, 2 אותן וחוטטין and you may clean the wells. Ib. 5a וכ׳ חופרין ואין .. ח׳ you may clean .o. . , but not dig (deepen) &c. [Ib. חוטטין ולא לתוכן you must not rake pebbles into them; v., however vers. Ms. M., Rabb. D. S. a. l.)- Y. ib. 80b bot. אותן חוטטין וכ׳ לון גרפין (not חוטטן) hott'tin means 'they rake them', as we read (Mikv. l. c.). -- 3) to take sheaves out with a rake. Succ. I, 8 וכ׳ בגדיש החוטט if one takes sheaves out of a stack, so as to form a shed (Succah). Ib. 15a. Pi. חטט 1) to rake. Y. Sabb. III, beg. 5c לחטט צריך וכ׳ ביד he must rake (coals and ashes out of the oven) with ahandle, which proves thathe must clean thoroughly. -- 2) to maake holes, to pick. Tosef. Mikv. VII (VIII), 2 לחטט צריך אוצין Var. (ed. Zuck. לחטחט) if the holes in the baskets are flled up with grapes &c , one must clean them by picking. B. Kam. 18a וכ׳ מחטטין שהיו תרנגולין chickens that picked on the rope of a bucket. Tosef. B. Mets. VIII, 30 וכ׳ את שמחטטין (Var. שמחטהטין) for they pick holes in the walls. -- 3) (with אחר) to dig after, to trace with the knife. Hull. 74b; Tosef. ib. VII, 4. -- 4) to trim. Hithpol. התחוטט to be cut (of jewels), to be polished, glisten. Meg. 12aa(play on בהט, Esrh. I, 6) שמתחוטטות אבנים במקומן לעינים המחוטטות אבנים וי״א בעליהן על Ms. r. (v. Rabb. D. S. a. . note 5) stones which glisten on those who wear them, and some say, Stones which dazzle the eyes in the place where they are found.
חטט I ch. same, to dig, hollow out. Hull. 25a; Sabb. 103a וכ׳ קפיזא דחט Ar. (ed. דחק) he hollowed out a K'fiבa (smaller measure) whereas the material was large enough for a Kab. Pes. 28a (prov.) בגויה נגרא דחט כפא ונישלוף חרדלא נשרי Ms. M. (read: ונישרוף; ed. נגרא דחט׳ וכ׳ נשרוף בגווה; Var. דחק) in the ladle which the artisan hollowed out, he shall have mustard soaked and shall swallow it (man is paid with his own coin). Pi. חטא, הטה to make look well, polish, dress, cleanse, prepare. Hull. 27a (play on ושחט, Lev. I, 5) ששח ממקום חטהו from the place where the animal bends (its head, the front of the neck), cleanse it (let its blood run out).
