Vaera 12 (play on כבד, Ex. VII, 14, a. הכבדי XIV, 18) בלשון
מתכבד אני בלשון בו שהכבדת with the same expression(כבד)
with which thou didst make heavy (Israel's yoke), I shall
be honored; Tanh. ed. Bub. ib. 14 לבך את שהכבדת where-
with thou didst harden thy heart. -- 3) to grow worse, be
very sick (cmp. טען II), opp. היקל. Snh. IX, 1ומת ה׳ grew
worse and died; ib. 78b; a. e. --- 4) to sweep. Num. R. s.
23; Tanh. Max'e 13 הכבידן he swept (drove) them out,
v. מכבד a. המם.
כבד ch. same; Pa. כביד to clean, sweep. Nidd. 56a bot. בדיק ולא כביד (=כבדי) Iswept(the alley) but did not search (for unclean objects). thpa. אתככד to be swept. Ib. 56b מתכבדא לא גומה a cavity is not swept (the broom does not strike it). Af. אכביד (v. כבד III) to irritate, grieve. Targ. Prov. XVII, 25 ed. Lag. (ed. Ven. מכביר, Ms. מככיר, h. text כעס).

כבד II m. (preced. wds.) 1) weight, pressure. Hag. 21a כלי של כבידו the pressure of the (inner) vessel. Snh. 63b; Meg. 25b (sarcasm on כבודו, Hos. X, 5) אלא כבודו א״ת כבידו (Ms. M. כובדו) read not 'his dignity but his weight' for it is gone, i. e. the idol's weight is reduced; Yalk. Is. 326 כבדו. - 2) tmportance, v. כבוד.
כבד III c. (b. h.; preced. wds.) [heaviness, seat of anger and melancholy,] liver. Ber. 61b top ומרה כועס כ׳ וכ׳ the liver is excited, and the gall pours a drop over it and quiets it. Hull. III, 1 הכ׳ ניטל; ib. 2 הכ׳ ניטלה if the liver of an animal is gone. Arakh. V, 2 (20a) כבדי ערך עלי (Bab. ed. כבידי) I vow the value of my liver (being a vital organ); a. fr.

כבוד m. (b. h.; כבד) 1) importance. Arakh. 18a ולידון בכבודו (Ar. בכבידו) and that the value of a limb be judged according to its importance (vitality); ib. 4b; B. Mets. 114a. -- 2) honor, respet; dignity. Ber. 19b, a. e., v. הלק. Ib. מלכים כבוד משום on account of the respect due to royalty. Ib.; Men. 37b וכ׳ הבריות כ׳ גדול human dignity (in proper appearance) is very important, for it may even suspend a Biblical law. Ber. l. c. כבודו לפי ואינו and it is not becoming his dignity (to drive an ass). Sot. 13a וכ׳ יותר במלכים כבודו לו הניחו let him alone, the honor shown to him (Jacob) by princes is higher than that by private men. Ib. כ׳ בהן נהגו they treated them with re- spect. Ned. 39b וכ׳ בכ׳ מחיתם לא בבבודי as long as My honor was concerned, you did not interfere, and when the honor of a human being is at stake &c. Ab. כבול I (b. h.) pr. n. Cabul, 1) כ׳ ארץ a district in Northern Palestine presented by Solomon to Hiram, king of Tyre. Sabb. 54a, v. כבל, כבל, כבלא. - 2) Cabul, (Kaibu) a place south-east of Accho. Tosef. M. Kat. II, 15; Tosef. Sabb. VII (VIII), 17; Y. Pes. IV, 30d top; Bab. ib. 51a.
כבול II m. (כבל) 1) (cmp. איסטמא) hair-net, a cap worn under the head-dress. Sabb. VI, 1; 5. -- Y. ib. 7d ולא טבוסה בכבולי, read שבכה בכ׳ ולא 'and not in a abul' (Mish. l. c.), that is a hair-net. Bab. ib. 57b יודע איני זה כ׳ וכ׳ אי this Rabul (Mish. l. c.) I do not know whether it means a lave's chain &c. -- 2) chain. -- Pl. כבולין chain- works for drawing water. Tosef. Mikv. IV, 2.

כבי, כבה (כבא) (b. h.; cmp. כאב) to grow dim. to be extinguished, go out. Sabb. 21a לה זקוק כבתה if the Hanuckah light went out, he is bound to attend to it. Y. Yoma II, 39d שכבת קטורת frankincense which went out (was not entirely burnt). Sabb. 30b נרו תכבה מוטב וכ׳ it is better that a human lightt(candle) be extinguished, than that God's light (life) be extinguished; a. fr. Pi. כיבה, כבה (כיבא) to cxtinguish.
