מסכת f. (b. h.; סכך I) 1) web on the loom. Ohol.VIII, 4 הפרוסה מ׳ he spread web, i. e. the web hanging from the transverse beam (vestis pendens, v. Sm. Ant. s. v. Tela). Kel. מסמס I (v. מסס) to melt, dissolve. Nithpa. נתמסמס to be molten, to be in a state of dis-- solution or liguefaction. Hull. 45b, v. מזמז. Ib. 53b הבשר ׳ if (in one spot of an animal known to have been attacked by a beast of prey) the flesh appears decayed; ib. היכי נ׳ דמי what do you mean by 'decayed (Answ.) שחדופא כל וכ׳ what a physician would peel of, until he comes on sound fesh; ib. 77a מתמסמס. Y. Ter. VIII, 46a top ששניתמסמסו מעיה בני (a melon) the core of which is liquefied.
מסמס ch. same, 1) to melt, make faint. Targ.Y. Deut. I, 28 מסמיסו (not מסמיסן; h. text המסו). -- Y. Shek. V, 48b מעיא ממסמס חמר דין היי Bab. ed. (v.Rabb. D. S. a. l. p. 43; oth. ed. סמס; Ms. M. סמי) which wine loosens the bowels. - 2) to soil, make loathsome. מסמס II (cmp. משמש) 1) to press, squeeze. - Part. pass. ממוסמס mashed, shapeless. Num. R. s. 14 (play on משמרות, Koh. XII, 10)מרות הם ממוסמסים שהיוצאים בשעה וכ׳ when they (the words of the Law) come out disfigured, they are bitter (drops) to those who hear them; v. מס I; Y. Snh. X, 28a bot. - Nidd. 24a (מוסמסין) מוססמסים שפניו מי (= ממו׳) a foetus whose face is mashed, contrad. to טוחות, v. טוח I. -- 2) (cmp. אממו) to press, rge, esp. (of medical treatment) to sustain vital energies. Gen. R. s. 82 כך וכ׳ נפשה ממססמסין this is the way they stimulate the vital energy of the travailing woman; (Yalk. ib. 136 משיבין); Yalk. Is. 263 החיה את שמסמסין (corr. acc.).
