עצב (b. h.) 1) to cut, form, shape. -2) (cmp. יגה a. יגון) to cut, grieve, pain. Pi. עישב to shape, handle, esp. to straighten an infant's body by msanipulation. Sabb. XXII, 6 הקטן את מעצבין אין you must not manipulate a child (on the Sabbath), expl. ib. 147b שדרה בחומרי straightening the vertebra (v. לפף). Tosef. Kel. B. Mets. II, 9 וכ׳ עליה מעצב שהוא bbecause he (the surgeon) manipulates children thereon. Hif העציבto grieve. Gen. עצב m. (b. h.; עצב 2) trouble, toil; that which is acguired through toil. -- Pl. עצבים. Num. R. s. 9 (ref. to ועצביך, Prov. V, 10) בנים אלא עצביך אאין (ed. Wil. וכ׳ עציבה) thy toils' means thy children (with ref. to Gen. III, 16); הארן יגיעת זו ע׳ thy toils' means painful labor in the field (with ref. to ib. 17).
עצבm., עצבה f. (b. h.; preced.) sad, griefstricken. Pes. 119a וכ׳ וע׳ אותו מנצחין בויד מלך a human King grieves when he is defeated, but the Lord &c.; (Midr. Till. to Ps. IV כועס), v. נצח. עצבון m. (b. h.; preced. wds.) grief, pain, toil. Num. R. s. 9 (ref. to Prov. V, 10, v. עצב) וכ׳ בע׳ שיאכלו לומר intimating that they shall eat with toil whatever they may eat (with ref. to Gen. III, 17). Pirke d'R. El. ch. XIV גדולו בעצבוון, v. סתם; a. e. -- Pl. עצבונות. Midr. Till. to Ps. XVI, 4 אדם לבני ע׳ הרבית ed. Bub. (mising in oth. ed.) thou didst decree many pains unto man (ref. to Gen. עצבונית f. (preced.) [a stinging plant,] prob. wild rose-bush. Gen. RR.s. 63 וכ׳ וע׳ להדס משל (Matt. K. עיצבונות; some ed. עכבונית, corr. acc.) this is like a myrtle and a rose-bush growing side by side; Yalk. ib. 110; Tanh. Ki Thetse 4 כצמוני.
עצבות, עציבותf. (preced. wds.) grief, sorrow. Ber. 31a וכ׳ ע׳ מתוך לא . אין you must not rise for prayer in a mood of grief or in languor ... but in religious joy. Pes. 117a וכ׳ ע׳ מתוך . השכינה אין the Divine Presence (holy inspiration) does not rest upon man in moments of languor or sadness &c. Hag. 5b וכ׳ לפני עצי׳ אין there is no sadness before the Lord, for it is written (IChr. XVI, 27) &c.; Yalk. Jer. 292.
עצה I f. (b. h.; v. עץ) 1) trees, plantation. Y. Sabb. III, 6a; Y. Succ. I, end, 52c שבים ע׳ התיר allowed the carrying of things on the Sabbath from trees in the water (on an island) to the water and vice versa (cmp. Erub. 67b שבים סלע); Y. Erub. עצה IIf. (b. h.; יעץ) counsel, advice, plan, consultation, council. Gen. R. s. 74 ע׳ נוטלין they hold council, v. רווח. Sot. 11a (ref. to Ex. I, 10) תחלה בע׳ התחיל הוא he was the first to propose (the destruction of Israel). Ib. היו לשלשה ע׳ באותה three men took part in that consultation.
