C H A PTER IX W A R R E C O R D S O F T H E C O U N T IE S T h e border troubles kept the military spirit of the pioneers o f Columbia and Montour counties alive until the second w ar with Eng land. Then followed the Black H aw k war, the Seminole war, the M exican war, and Lastly the C ivil war. in these conflicts the two coun ties took part to the extent o f furnishing men and munitions o f war. principally during the G v il war. During the period between that memorable conflict and the Indian times sev eral companies were o^anizcd in I>anville, Bloomsburg and Berwick, mention o f which is made in the chapters devoted to those towns.
During the w ar o f 18 12 the scene o f hos tilities w as too fa r aw ay to alTect this sec tion directly. When the British threatened to attack Baltimore, Governor Snyder ordered the militia o f Northumberland, Luzerne and Columbia counties to rendezvous at Danville, under M ajor Post. F o r a few weeks they re mained in camp, but the battle o f New Orleans and the termination of the w ar caused the camp to be abandoned. T he r^u ircm cn ts of the militia system were at this time so simple that the military spirit of the county became quiescent until the out break of the M exican war caused its sudden revival.
