1. Se-sia means 'provincial capital'—This is the expression invariably used by Tiechius—while Cantonese use the equivalent 'Shang Sheng.' In the same way 'hu-sia' will be used by the people of a prefecture to denote their prefectural city.
2. 'Smoky fort.' Yin Thoi' is really the name of the foreign concession' on the opposite side of the harbour to the Chinese town of Chi-fau 芝罘 and the name given to the site of the foreign concession has ousted the real name of the place.
3. 'Shok-tsai-fau' means 'Little stone port', alluding to the phosphate work.
