his people." (Luke i. 68.) "Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men." (Psalm cvii. 8.) "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits." (Psalm ciii. 2.)
OH! what a theme for human contemplation is the love of God, our Creator, to the children of men! It is a love at once pure, perfect, and universal—a love that sends showers of blessings upon all. The Lord's love to us is everlasting and changeless; hence in His Word He says—"Therefore with loving-kindness have I drawn thee." (Jer. xxxi. 3.) The divine attractive power is Love. "God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him." (1 John iv. 16.) Because the love of God is the very life and soul of the universe, and of all that are therein, therefore it is most true that "in Him (God) we live, move, and have our being." (Acts xvii. 28.) Thus, love is the life of man; by love he lives to grow in wisdom, and love moves him to every outward act.
O my soul! let thine affections rise above everything sordid and selfish, so shalt thou catch a portion of that celestial fire to warm thy heart and regulate thy life! O remember with awe and gratitude, that the same Divine Love that created thee in the beginning, redeemed thee in time, and preserves thee for evermore.
