He was Knighted between 1416 and 1421, and appears, jure mnriti, to have been considered LOUD COBHAM. IV directed "Jgduardo Broke dc Coblmm, CkiraXm:" He was a firm adherent to the House of York ; was at the battle of St. Albans, 23 May 1455, and took part in the solemn procession to St. Paul's, London, as also at the battle of Northampton, 10 July 1460. He m. Elizabeth, da. of James (Tucket), Lord Audley, by Eleanor, his second wife. He d. 1464. VII. 1464. 7. John- (Brooke), Lord Codham, s. and h., who was sum. to Pari, by writs( d ) from 19 Aug. (1472) 12 Ed. IV to 28 Nov. (1511) 3 Hen. VIII. He attended the coronation of Kiclmrd III, from whom he received several grants, but was employed by Henry VII (1491-02) in an expedition into Flanders, and on 24 June 1497 defeated (with Lord Abergavenny) the Cornish insurrection at Blaekheath), where his cousin, Lord Audley (afterwards executed) was taken prisoner. He m. firstly Eleanor, da. of ( ) Ai'STell, of co. Suffolk. She//. s.p. He m, secondly Margaret, da. of Edward (Nevill), Lord Aiikruavknxy, by his second wife, Katharine, da. of Sir Robert Howard. (1515) 7 Hen. VIII(°) to 15 April (1523) 14 Hen. VIIL He took part in the wars with France ; was at the siege of Tonrnay and at the "battle of Spurs," 18 Aug. 1513 ; was made Knight Banneret by the King in 1514 ; was at the " Field of the Cloth of Gold " in 1520 ; was one of the 12 Barons for the trial of the Duke of Buckingham, and in 1525 was one of the Com- missioners for the co. of Kent to levy the arbitrary assessment imposed by the Royal prerogative. He m. firstly Dorothy, da. of Sir Henry Haydon, by whom he had' 13 children. He m. secondly Dorothy Southwell, widow, who d. s.p. He m. thirdly Elizabeth Hart by whom he had no issue. He d. 19 July 1529 and was bur. at ( a ) In this brass her second husband only (by whom only, apparently, she had surviving issue) is commomorftted. On the brass are no less than 6 sons and 4 daughters, besides 6 coats of arms, the last being those of her son-in-law, viz., Brooke impaling Cobham. These are fully described by Mr. Waller in the " Arch. Cant." All the brasses at Cobham are well represented in Belcher's "Kentish Brasses," as also (in smaller size.) in the " Arch. Cunt." Vols, xi and xii. (t>) " Henry Oldcastle, son and heir of John, Lord Cobham " ir alluded to, in Pat.' 7 Hen. VI. (See Banks' Bar. Angl." Vol. i, p. 161) but this appears to have been one of Sir John's ,four children by a previous wiie. By Joan, Lady Cobham, he had, apparently, but one child, a da., Joane, who d. young. (") It is printed in Furnivall's "Fifty Earliest English wills, 1387-1439." ( d ) There is proof in the Rolls of Pari, of his sitting. (») The writ of 1515 is directed to "John" iustead of to " Thomas," i.e. to his Father (who was dead) by mistake for himself.
