Be was M.P. for Blechiugley, 1805-06 ; for Malrnosbury, 1S0G-07 ; for Appleby, 1807-12 ; for Thetford, 1818-26 ; for Borsham, 1827-32 ; and for Wells, 1834 to 1837, and having been a consistent supporter of the Whig party, was, by the Melbourne administration, cr. 15 May 1839, BARON COL- BOKNE OF WEST BARLING, co. Norfolk. Be was a great patron of Art, and bequeathed to the Nat. Gallery, of which he was a trustee, 8 valuable pictures. Be m., 14 June 1808, at St Marylebone, Charlotte, 1st da. of the Rt. Hon. Thomas Steele, by Charlotte, 1st da. of Gen. Sir David Lindsay, Bart. [S.] Be (/. s.p.m.s. 3 Hay 1851, in Hill Street, Midx., aged 75, when his peerage became cxtincl.(*) Will pr, June 1851. Ch.), 14 June 1775, winning the Chancellor's prize (Latin verse) " Petrus Magnus " (when he received a medal from the Empress Catharine) in 1777 ; B.C.L., 1783 ; D.C.L. (Grand Coinp.), 1793 ; Vinerian scholar, 1781 ; Vineriau fellow, 1786-92. Be was called to the bar (Mid. Temple), 1 "83, and joined the Oxford circuit ; Clerk of the Rules in the court of King's Bench (worth £27,000 a year) in 1794 ; M.P. for Belston, 1790-1802 ; for Woodstock, 1802-06 ; for Oxford Univ., 1806-17, introducing into Pari, several practical measures for law reform ; Chairman of the Finance Com- mittee, 1797 ; Chairman of the Record Committee, 1800, and, subsequently, of the Record Commission. In 1S01 he introduced a bill, which is the origin of the now census ; Chief Secretary for Ireland, 1801 ; Speaker of the Bouse OF Commons, 11 Feb. 1802, for 15 years, during which time he, in 1805, gave his casting vote (which in such cases is more usually withheld) for the impeachment of Lord Melville as Treasurer of the Navy. Be retired in 1817, and was raised to the Peeraye as above stated, with a pension of £4,000 for life and one of £3,000 for his next successor. ( a ) Bis only s., the Bon.
