Le Brim, in the Faubourg St. Germain, Paris, 10 July 1748 ; served heir of entail and provision to the said Duke, 9 Sep. 1761 when he took the name of Doughs in lieu of that of Stewart, but his claim to the Douglas estates being opposed by the Duke of Hamilton (the heir male) on the ground of his being a suppositious Ron of his mother,^') the Court of Session, in July 1707, decided (by the casting vote in a Court of 15) against him, but this decision was two years later reversed 27 Feb. 1771, by the House of Lords. He was M.P. for co. Forfar, 1782-90,( 1 >) when, on 8 July 1790, he was cr. BARON DOUGLAS OF DOUGLAS, co. Lanark. Col. of the Forfarshire Militia, 1793 ; Lord Lieut, of co. Forfar. He m. firstly 13 June 1771, at St. Geo. Han. sq., Lucy, da. of William (Graham), 2d Duke of Montkose [S.], by Lucy, da. of John (Manners), 2d Duke of Rutland. She, who was 6. 9 Aug. 1751, d. 13 Feb. 1780, at Bothwell Castle ( c ). He m. secondly, 13 May 1783, at her brother's house, Gro3venor sq., Midx. (St. Geo. Han. sq.), Frances, sister of Henry, 3d Duke of Bvccleuch [S.], da. of Francis Scott, styled Earl of Dalkeith, by Caroline, da. and coheir of John (Campbell), 2d Duke of Argyll [S.] She, who was b. (posthumous) 26 July 1750, d. 31 March 1817. Will pr. 1818. He d. 26 Dec. 1827, in his 80th year at Bothwell Castle. Will pr. April 1828. He and both his wives were bur. at Douglas, co. Lanark. (of the whole blood) and h. ; b. 26 Oct. 1775 in London. Barrister (Line. Inn) 1802. M.P. for co. Lanark, 1831. He d. unm. 10 Sep. 1S48, in his 73rd year at 6 St. George's Place, Hyde Park, Midx. Will pr. Oct. 1848. IV. 1848, J/. James (Douglas), Baron Douglas of Douglas, br. to (of the half blood) and h., being s. of the 1st Baron by his 2d wife. 1857. He was b. 9 Julv and bap. 6 Aug. 17S7, at Petersham, Surrey ; ed. at Ch. Ch., Oxford ; B.A., 1810 ; M.A., 1816 ; in holy orders ; Rector of Marsh Gibbon, Bucks, 1819-48 ; Rector of Broughton, co. Northampton, 1825-48. He m. 18 May 1813, Wilhelmina, 2d da. of Gen. the Hon, James-Patriek Murray (5th s. of Alexander, 4th Lord Elibank [S.], by his 2d wife, Anne, da. of Abraham Witiiam. He d. s.p. at Bothwell Castle, 6 April 1857, aged 09, when the title became extinct. Will pr. July 1857. His widow d. 25 Feb. 1866, aged 79, at 19 Grosvenor square, Midx. (") Lady Jano Douglas wa3 b. at Douglas, 17 March 1698 ; IK. (as his second wife) 4 Aug. 1716, Col. John Stewart (afterwards, 1 Nov. 1759, a Baronet) and d. at Edinburgh 22 Nov. 1753. She is said to have had twin sons in her 51st year, b. 10 July 1748, of whom the yst., Sholto Thomas Stewart, d, at Edinburgh 14 May 1753, in his 5th year; while the eldest shc. to the Douglas estates as in the text. It is remarked by Sir Bernard Burke that many doubts had existed from the time of his birth as to its genuineness, " the Duke of Douglas himself being among those who considered the children to have been "stolen or bought." Sir Bernard adds that " when the question is now considered after the lapse of a century, apart from personal feeling and party bias, it seems impossible to reconcile the contradictory assertions connected with the strange story of Mr. Douglas' birth or to resist the strong appearance of imposture."
