He m. firstly, Margaret, da. and h. of Thomas (Butler), Baron Cauer [I.], which Margaret was aged 21 in 1627 on the death of her father, and d. in Dublin, 1632. He m. secondly, Ellen, widow of Sir Robert Cressv, relict, formerly, of Sir Douglas O'Conor, da. of Gerald Fitz-James (Fitz-Gerald), Earl op Desmond [I.] by his 2nd wife Eleanor, da. of Eduiond (Butler), 1st Bauon Dunboyne [I ] abovenamed. He d. 17 May 1610. His widow d. 1060, aud was bur. in Long Abbey. IV. 1G10. Jf. James (Butler), Baron Dunboyne [I.], s. and h. by 1st wife. M.P. for co. Tipperary 1639. He m. Ellen, da. of Pierce (Butler), 1st Viscount Ikerrin [I.], by Ellen, da. of Walter (Butler), Earl of Ossorv and Ormond [I.] He appears to have been outlaiocd and attainted in the Irish rebellion o£ 1611. Pierce (Butler), Baron Dunboyne [I,], cousin and h. male, being only s. and h. of Edmoud Butler, of Curragh (who d. 16)1), by Honors Gould, da. of Willliam U'Mulryan, which Edmond was 1st. s. and h. of Pierce B. of Balldroghid, co. Tipperary (who d. 1626), s. of James, the 2d Baron by his 1st wife. He also was attainted, probably in 1611, but certainly in 1691. The Duke of Ormonde writes from Clonmell, 12 Sept. 1666 :— "Here are many of the antient nobility in miserable coudition, amongst the rest here is a very sad peere calld the Lord of Dunboyne, of my name and family. The place from whence hee derives his title was the gift of one of my auncestors, and so I have recovered it, but with a purpose to restore it, and the rather if, as hee says hee will, he lets mee havo the breedeing of his sonne, a youth of about 13 years old, as I take it. The reason why I tell you this is because, if I take him, I would have your assistance to place him where hee may bee bred a Protestant" etc. 11th Report Mist. MSS., App. v, p. 14.
