John Butler, usually called Baron Dunboyne [I.], uncle and h., being 3d son of the 9th Lord, b. about 1720 ; was nom., 16 April 1763, by Pope Clement XIII as (Roman Catholic) Bishop of Cork, being then, or afterwards, CP. This See he resigned, 13 Dec. 3 786, soon after he sue. to his right of pesrage, demanding at the same time a dispensation to marry. This being refused by Pope Pius VII, he became a Protestant, his recantation being read at Cloumel, 19 Aug. 1787. He m. in 1787, at the age of nearly 70 ( — ), da. of ( — ) Theobald, of Wilford, co. Tipperary. He d. s.p., 7 May 1800,(") aged about 80, having reverted to his former faith, devising the Dunboyne estate, for the purpose of the education of the Irish Roman-Catholics to Maynootli College. His widow (who survived him 60 years), m. John Herbert Moore, of Shannon Grove, King's County, Barriater-at-Law, and d. Aug. 1860, aged 96. XIII. 1800, 13. James Butler, usually called, since 1800, and or legally acknowledged, since 1827, Baron Dunboyne [I.], cousin and 1827. b. male, being only s. and h. of James Butler, of Cragnngowra, co. Clare (who d. 22 May 1784), by Bridget, da. of Bartholomew Siieehy, which last named James was only s. and h. of Michael B. (who d. 15 Aug. 1776), 2d s.( b ) of Edward B. of Clare, co. Tipperary, s. and h. of James B. who was s. and h. of Edward Butler both of Clare, afsd., which Edward was a younger s. of James, 2d Baron Dunboyne [I.] by his Becond wife, Margaret, ne'e O'Brien. He was b. 25 Julv 1780. Having proved his pedigree as heir to the grantee he "was confirmed in that Peerage " (i.e., the BARONY OF DUNBOYNE [I.]) " by reversal of the outlawries which affected the title, in the Court of King's Bench in Dublin in Michaelmas term 1827, by virtue of His Majesty's wan-ant dat. at Windsor 20 Oct. 1827, authorizing and requiring his Attorney Gen. [I.] to fiat writs of error for the examination of the records and process of the outlawries [i.e., those of the 4th and 6th Baron] to confess the errors therein and to consent to the reversal thereof." ( c ) He m. firstly 17 Aug. 1799, Eleanor, da. of David O'Conneix, of Cork. She d. 15 March 1817. He m. secondly 19 Dec. 1843, at St. Geo. Han. sq., Mary Anne Vincent Vacohan, of Belle Hatch House, Henley, Oxon. She d. 1847. Will pr. June 1817. He d. 6 July 1S50, in his 70th year, at Chateau Ecliiugheu, Pas de Calais. Will pr. Nov. 1851. XIV. 1850. 14- Theobald Fitzwalteu (Butler), Baron Dun- boyne [I.], s. and h., by first wife, 6. 11 Feb. 1806, at Waterville, co, Kildare. His right to the Barony was confirmed by the committee for privileges of the House of Lords, 10 Aug. 1860. Rep. Peer [I.] 1867-81. He m. 14 Nov. 1832, Julia Celestina Maria, 2d da. of William Brander, of Mordeu Hall, co. Surrey. He d. 22 March 1881, at Knoppogue Castle, co. Clare. His widow living 1890. XV. 1881. 15. James Fitzwalter (Butler, afterirarch Clifford- Butler), Baron Dunboyne [I.], s. and h., b. 20 May 1839, in Dublin ; ed. at Winchester school ; Lieut. Col. 2nd Monmouth Rifle Vols., 1867-72. He m. 12 June 1860, at All Saints', Knightsbridge, Midx., Marion, only da. of Col. Henry Morgan Clifford, of Llantilio Croseny, co. Monmouth, by Catherine Harriet, da. of Joseph Yorke, grandson of Philip, 1st Earl of Hardwicke, and, iu consequence thereof, by royal lie. 13 Nov. 1860, took the name of Clifford before that of Butlei: i.e., " DUNBOYNE OF DUNBOYNE, co. Meath," Barony [I.] {Grim ston), cr. 1719 with the Viscountcy of Gbimston [I.], which see. (") The Barony was claimed shortly after his death as a Barony in fee, by his great nephew and h. general William O'Brien-Butler, grandson and h. of his sister, Catharine, by William O'Brien.
