He was 6. 3 Jan. 1822, at Ednaston Lodge in Brailsford, co. Derby, was styled Viscount Tamworth, since 1830 ; was ed. at Eton. He m. 23 July 1844,(») at St. Geo. Han. sq., Augusta Annabella, 1st da. of Edward (Chichester) 3d Marquess op Donkoall [L], by Amelia Spread Deane, da. of Henry Deane O'Grady. He d. at Staunton Harold 13 and was bur. there 22 March 1859, aged 37. His widow, who was J. 20 June 1826, m. 15 June 1864, at Chiddingstone, Kent, Frederick Henry Walsh, sometime Capt. 78th Highlanders and was living 1890. X. 1859. 10. Sewallis Edward (Shirley), Earl Ferrers and Viscount Tamworth [1711J and a Baronet [1611], only surv. s. and h., b. 24 Jan. 1847, at Chartley Castle and privately bap. there, tho' received into the church 19 Aug. following at Staunton; ed. at Trin. Coll., Cambridge; B.A. 1867 ; M.A., 1870. He m. 24 Oct 1885, at St. Geo. Han. Bq., Ina Maude, 4th da. of William Henry Hare (White), 3d Earl op Bantbt [I.], by Jane, da. of Charles John Herbert. She was 6. 20 May 1852. Family Estates.— These, in 1883, consisted of 6,862 acre3 in Staffordshire ; 1,801 in Leicestershire and 3 in Derbyshire. Total, 8,666 acres, worth £12,707 a year. Principal Residences. Chartley Castle, co. Stafford, and Staunton Harold, co. Leicester. FERRERS or FERRERS DE GROBY. Barony by 1. William Ferrers, of Groby, co. Leicester, only s. Writ. an d h- °£ William Ferrers of the same,( b ) by his first wife, Joane, da. of Hugh Le Dkspencku, was aged 18 at the death of his father in I. 1300. 1288; had livery of his lands in England, 1292, and in Scotland 1295 ; was sum. to attend the King at Salisbury, 26 Jan. 1296/7( c ) and was sum. to Pari, as a Baron [LORD FERRERS] by writs directed " milielmo de Ferrariis " from 26 Sep. (1300), 28 Ed. I, to 20 Feb. (1324/5), 28 Ed. EL He was in the wars in France and Scotland ; was one of the Barons who in 1301 subscribed the celebrated letter to the Pope,( d ) and was sum. to the coronation of Edward II. He is said to have m. Margaret, da. of John (Segrave), Loud Seqrave, by Christian, da. of Sir Hugh Plessetis. He d. (] 324-25) 18 Ed. EL It 1325. 2. Henry (Ferrers), Lord Ferrers [de Groby], s. and h., aged 22, at the death of his father in 1325. He, also, served in the Scotch and French wars and obtained large grants of land from the crown for his services. He was sum. to Pari, from 5 June (1331), 4 Ed. III., to 20 Nov. (1342), 16 Ed. III., by writs directed "Henrico de Fermriis." He m. Isabel, 4th da. and coheir of Theobald (Verdon), Lord Verdon, being his only child by his second wife, Elizabeth, Dow. Countess op Ulster [I.], da. of Gilbert (dk Clare), Earl op Gloucester. He d. (1343) 17 Ed. III. His widow, who was heiress of Ludlow Castle and other considerable property in England and Ireland, d. 25 July 1349. ( a ) An unsuccessful trial for breach of promise of marriage (Damages laid at £20,000) was brought against him in 1846, by Miss Mary Smith. ( b ) He was yr. br. to Robert, the last Earl of Derby of the family of Ferrers, being 2d and yst. s. of William, Earl of Derby, by Margaret, da. and coheir of Roger (Da Quinci) Earl of Winchester, which Margaret inherited the estate of Groby and con- ferred it on this William Ferrers, her yst. Bon, who thereupon assumed the arms of De Quinci (viz.) " Ou, 7 moscles, voided, or " which his descendants continued to use till the male line of the elder branch (the Lords Ferrers [of Chartley]) became extinct (°) See vol. i, p. iii, note " b," tub "Ap Adam," as to this writ not constituting a regular writ of summons to Pari.
