Surmounting of signs

14.(1) The signs shown in Part I of the First Schedule other than the signs shown in diagrams Nos. 128, 142, 143, 144, 149 and 157 to 165 inclusive in that Part shall be surmounted by a triangle of the size, colour and type shown in diagram 101.

(2) The signs shown in diagrams Nos. 204, 205, and 206 in Part II of the First Schedule shall be surmounted by a ringed triangle of the size, colour and type shown in diagram No. 201 and the signs shown in diagrams Nos. 209 to 214 inclusive in that Part shall be surmounted by a ring of the size, colour and type shown in diagram No. 207.

(3) The signs shown in Part III of the First Schedule other than the signs shown in diagrams Nos. 304, 305, 307 and 316 to 326 inclusive shall be surmounted by a disc of the size, colour and type shown in diagram No. 301.

(4) Methods of assembling the triangle, the ringed triangle, the ring or disc referred to in the preceding provisions of this Regulation with a sign or signs which it is to surmount in accordance with those provisions are indicated by way of example only in diagrams Nos. 102, 103, 104, 202, 203, 208, 302 and 303 in the First Schedule.

Arrangement of multiple route and place signs

15. Where a direction sign shown in any of the diagrams Nos. 429 to 457 inclusive, 465, 467, 479 and 480 in the First Schedule indicates more than one route in any one direction or more than one place on a route, the routes and places shall be arranged vertically and so as to read from top to bottom in order of distance from the site where the sign is erected, the nearer or nearest route or place being uppermost.

16. In signs shown in diagrams Nos. 429, 430, 448, 450, 452 and 479 in the First Schedule the order of directions reading from top to bottom shall be Ahead, Left Fork, Left Turn, Right Fork, Right Turn to accord with the circumstances.

Colour of signs

17.(1) Except where otherwise indicated in any diagram, and subject to the following provisions of this Regulation, all letters, numerals, symbols, arrows and borders on signs shown in the First Schedule shall be black on a white ground.

(2) The colour of the background surrounding any panel showing any route number or place in a direction sign shall in the case of such a sign shown in any of the diagrams Nos. 431 to 447 inclusive be yellow if the sign is erected at or near a road junction in a County Borough, Borough or Urban District in England and Wales or a Burgh in Scotland.

(3) Signs shown in diagrams Nos. 476 and 478 may be in such colours as the British Transport Commission may think fit having regard to the region of their railway undertaking in which any such sign is required.

Illumination of signs by lighting

18.(1) The signs shown in diagrams Nos. 215 and 307 shall be illuminated at all times by the fitting of a means of internal lighting.

(2) The sign shown in diagram No. 158 shall not be illuminated by the fitting of a means of external lighting.

(3) Subject to the foregoing provisions of this Regulation, any sign shown in the First Schedule may be illuminated by the fitting of a means of lighting:
