Provided that on and after the expiration of one year from the coming into operation of these Regulations the sign shown in diagram No. 204 shall, unless it is illuminated by the use of reflectors or reflecting material in accordance with the provisions of the next succeeding Regulation, be illuminated during the hours of darkness as so defined in the Road Transport Lighting Act, 1927(a)[1], by the fitting of a means of external lighting. Illumination of signs by reflectors

19.(1) The traffic sign shown in diagram No. 158 shall be illuminated by the use of red reflectors when the sign indicates the near side edge of the carriageway or an obstruction near that edge and by the use of white reflectors when that sign indicates the offside edge of the carriageway or an obstruction near that edge.

(2) Signs shown in diagrams Nos . 215 and 307 shall not be illuminated by the use of reflectors or reflecting material.

(3) Subject to the foregoing provisions of this Regulation, the following provisions as to the illumination of signs by the use of reflectors or reflecting material shall apply.

(4) Any sign shown in the First Schedule may have white reflectors fitted to any letter or numeral not being less than 3 inches in height which is incorporated in the sign.

(5) Where reflectors are fitted to any letter or numeral in accordance with the last preceding paragraph of this Regulation

(a) the diameter of the reflectors shall be:—

(i)516 of an inch in the case of letters or numerals 3 inches in height;

(ii)⅜ of an inch in the case of letters or numerals 4 inches or 44 inches in height; and

(iii)⅝of an inch in the case of letters or numerals 6 inches or 8 inches in height; and

(b) the reflectors shall be so fitted as:—

(i)to be spaced at 2 diameters approximately; and

(ii)not to be less than, nor more than, 5 in any vertical stroke forming part of a letter or numeral.

(6) Any sign, being a sign containing a symbol and shown in any of the diagrams Nos. 105 to 112 inclusive, 118, 119, 120, 124 to 127 inclusive, 130, 131, 142 to 146 inclusive, 205, 206, 214 and 473, may have white reflectors fitted to the symbol and the number, size and arrangement of the reflectors in the symbol shall be as indicated in such of the said diagrams as relates to that sign.

(7) Any sign, being a sign incorporating an arrow 154 inches in length and shown in any of the diagrams Nos. 209, 210, 213 and 407 may have white reflectors fitted to the arrow and the size of reflectors fitted to the arrow shall be as indicated in diagram No. 209.

(8) Where any sign is fitted with white reflectors in accordance with the last four paragraphs of this Regulation or where any sign shown in diagram No. 204 is illuminated by the fitting of a means of external lighting in accordance with the provisions of paragraph ( 3) of the last preceding Regulation and any such sign is to be surmounted in accordance with the relevant provisions of Regulation 14 of these Regulations by a triangle, ringed triangle, ring or disc, the said triangle, ringed triangle, ring or disc shall be fitted with red reflectors and the number, size and arrangement thereof shall be as indicated in diagrams Nos. 101, 201, 207 and 301 respectively.
