Introduction

This is my first attempt to contribute to the Wiki community, please forgive my lack of style, and of content.

I have a very old book, the "Encyclopaedia of Music", published in 1880. According to the copyright guidelines here, this book is well out of copyright and is now in the public domain. I purchased OCR software and I am presently scanning a few pages at a time in, and posting them here.

Again, forgive my lapses in formatting, content, etiquette, etc. I will improve over time.

Editing Marks, Changes From Original Text

When I need to make an edit that is not in the original text, I place the edit in single brackets, ex. [triple horizontal bars].

In general, I have attempted to leave the text as originally written, and I have corrected OCR and proofreading mistakes as I have found them. Because I am not reading every word and comparing it to the original text, errors should be attributed to me, not the text (it appears the text is very clean, though it sometimes uses archaic English words and phrases).

Want to be Proofreader?

I am scanning in this encyclopedia, saving each page in an image, then running the pages through an OCR (OmniPage Pro 14). OmniPage does a good job, but still makes mistakes. I find and correct the obvious errors (spelling and formatting mistakes), but I can certainly miss things such as words that were not recognized correctly but are not misspelled, either (my current favorite is scanning "speak" into "sneak"). If you'd like to help fix mistakes I didn't find, I can send you the scanned pages to compare the source text with the posted text. It is probably tedious and mind-numbing work, but if you care about a particular topic in this encyclopedia enough to correct it, I can certainly supply you with the source material. --Damon 20:39, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

You could also upload the scans to Wikimedia Commons. They have a program Commonist that allows for mass uploads of images. I think that would be the best way to coordinate proofreading these pages.—Zhaladshar ^(Talk) 21:40, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia templates

Templates now exist on en.wikipedia to link into this encyclopaedia see

• w:template:cite CEM -- behaves like "cite book" but fills in some fields and uses "wstitle=" as the parameter to access this copy of the encyclopaedia. Just put in the name of the article, the template takes care of adding in /n/ where n is letter the subdirectory.
• w:template:CEM Same as cite CEM but adds wrapper text if the text from here is incorporated into a Weikipedia article.
• w:template:CEM poster like the other poster templates on wikipdia. No named parameter but like cite CEM adds in the sub-directory letter automatically.
