Work categories

edit

Hi, we don't do work-based categories for the sub-pages of works. Please see Help:Categorization. This means that Category:Three Years in Europe is not required. In fact the invididual letters should never have been separately categorised into Category:Slavery, only the mainspace page should be there. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 23:58, 24 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the note. I'll de-categorise them. You live and learn. :) Green Giant (talk) 00:46, 25 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Category renaming — we're not Commons

edit

We are not the sticklers of Commons, and we use our categories per the general word — to group — not for full descriptive life history. So your filling recent changes with the PLOS recategorisation looks pretty futile, especially as the aim is to move the files to Commons when the the project is ready to do so [we keep the bare minimum here, in what cannot be moved to Commons]. If necessary, just create a {{category redirect}} in your desired new category so that the hotcat can find things. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:48, 12 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Noted. I'm trying to find things to do outside Wikipedia and Commons, so all of this is a learning process. I have to say though, it wasn't really futile because I didn't spend too much time on it - just a few clicks on Cat-a-lot and it was done in less than a minute. By the way, I'm quite aware of category redirects having made hundreds of them on several wikis. :P Green Giant (talk) 13:12, 13 September 2015 (UTC)Reply

Dear participant of the wiki, I ask You to help with advice. There are the categories "Workplace safety"; "Workplace safety of Russia" & "Noise" in the English wiki. And there are the same categories ("Охрана труда" / Occupational safety (in Russia) - in translation) and ("Шум" / Noise - in translation) in the Russian wiki. The connection (link) has been established between the categories "Workplace safety in Russia" and "Охрана труда"; but there are no connection between categories of "Noise" and "Шум" now. Where I should submit an inquiry to establish the relationship between the last two categories?
Thank You AlexChirkin (talk) 10:39, 12 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

@AlexChirkin: when you say "Russian wiki", do you mean ru:Category:Шум? If so, you will need to create the category by adding it to another category. When you have done that, go to WikiData and look for the section about Wikisource links. Click on the edit button, enter "ru" in the language field, and the category name on the second field including the word "Category". Click on "save" and wait for about 30 seconds. The links should then appear on the Wikisource page. I hope that helps. Green Giant (talk) 20:20, 13 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank You very much for an exhaustive and accurate advice! AlexChirkin (talk) 09:39, 15 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi. In case you are still interested, I extracted a list of all the PSM categories and their counts and PLACED THEM HEREand updated THIS LIST accordingly. I did this in case you are still interested in reviewing, modifying, or adding new categories. Needless to say, I am very grateful for your contribution to my "pet" project. — Ineuw talk 19:53, 9 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Correspondence / Letters categories

edit

On en-Wikisource we don't categorize this way. Instead we list the correspondence at the appropriate Author: page for the writer. To categorize the items as well is needless and duplicates what appears on Author pages. In general we do not create categories of a particular "form" of writing by the Author who created it (i.e. We don't have "Category:Books by Agatha Christie" or "Category:Letters by Henry David Thoreau".) --EncycloPetey (talk) 23:53, 2 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

@EncycloPetey: Hmm... I seem to be getting mixed messages on this issue (see for example Ineuw's message above). I've looked at Help:Categorization but there is nothing there that says this style of categorisation should not be done. Could you point me to a discussion/guideline/policy on this? Green Giant (talk) 00:15, 3 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
We have two separate category structures: one for categorizing author pages according to the sort of author they are (Canadian, novelist, 19-th century, woman, etc.) and a second category structure for categorizing works according to the sort of work it is (topic, format, genre, date). But the two sets of categories are kept separate; we do not categorize works according to "form by author". It is true that our Help pages are lacking in many respects. We had a big push several years ago to develop them, and a lot of information was added at that time, but community interest in continuing to develop then waned. We are a relatively small community, unlike Wikipedia or Commons, so a lot of our practices are not detailed in easily accessible form. Discussions on standard practices are typically scattered across many pages and many years. But the fundamental split in our category hierarchy is one of our longest-standing practices.
Ineuw's message above is about PSM categories. This is merely for articles that appeared in a particular publication. Note that "Correspondence" is not categorized. --EncycloPetey (talk) 00:25, 3 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ah yes the good old "unwritten rules" of Wikimedia. I don't think I'll ever agree with this "breadcrumbs" approach because it seems only part of the solution to me. It may sound Wikipedianist but I think categories, templates, infoboxes and navboxes are all just ways to help the reader. By restricting these things we are reducing the effectiveness of the wiki, which kind of defeats the object of a wiki. The way you've described it, consensus seems to have emerged piecemeal but there is a danger of becoming stuck in habits without a formal process. This is something to raise on the scriptorium but I suspect it will raise the same hackles that stop Commons from hosting fair-use images instead of deleting them. Stewards' request

edit

Hi, I had to call on a steward like you because the Korean steward who globally blocked my account doesn't want to listen to what I had to say and I'm afraid he could globally blocked my IP address too.

I'm an Italian user. I think you already know about the noted Polish LTA "Wikinɡer", don't you? Well, he's currently vandalizing also it.wikipedia. He's been vandalizing pages and talk pages about robots since over a year. He both uses open proxies and sockpuppets to do so, which are always blocked short after the vandalisms. About one year ago I registered an account, JoyBiII, in order to help Italian sysops fighting him. I've always been logging in using my Italian Internet connection, which provides 2 IP ranges, 5.170.0.0/16 and 5.171.0.0/16. I'm sure you have the tools to check my recent logs and verify what I've just said. I've never been logging in from proxies or from a Polish IP address.

A week ago I was reverting Wikinɡer in it.wikipedia as usual, because after months of absence he decided to come back some weeks ago. Can you guess what happened? The steward I've talked about above, -revi, has globaly blocked my account because... I'm Wikinɡer! I couldn't believe it when I read the reason. He's even a steward and a checkuser in login.wikimedia, and he didn't even check before doing it. There was also an Italian sysop who committed the same mistake and blockd my account in it.wikipedia without listening to what I had to say about that, but last year I've already been speaking with other Italian sysops who acknowledged my good faith and my deniability, they could talk to him and make him understand he just mistook me for Wikinɡer. However, as long as my global account is blocked that would be useless.

I'd like to ask you to please check that my account JoyBiII has nothing to do with Wikinɡer, with his proxies and his socks, even if he registered also a few socks with a name similar to mine, that is JoyBiil, JoyBiiII and JoyByll. Please, verify my innocente and unblock my account, that -revi should be told to pay more attention when he globally blocks somebody because he may make mistakes as he did in this case.

Thank you! 5.170.47.88 10:03, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

In this kind of environment it is difficult to know who is really who, unless we all had to use our real names and have photos of ourselves on our user pages. The account you refer to has not been globally locked, nor locally blocked, nor made any edits. Please check your username is correctly spelt. Green Giant (talk) 02:23, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

It is correctly spelled, the global account is the following: [1]. I meant that it's impossible that an Italian Internet connection like mine can be used from Poland; no preventive check was done before blocking my account and that's why it was mistaken for one of Wikinɡer's even if it was always used to undo his edits. 5.170.47.254 08:44, 16 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me, could you give me a reply, please? Even if you just can't or don't want to help me, please tell me, but I hope that you, a stweard, will give me a hand about this misunderstanding concerning my blocked account. 5.170.47.46 19:00, 17 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

I'm not ignoring you but I have multiple issues to deal with both on-wiki and off-wiki, and cannot focus entirely on your difficulties. I note that you have asked at least one other steward for help (purely by coincidence). Have you had any response from them? Green Giant (talk) 19:18, 17 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Ok, sorry for being insistent with you. If it's just a matter of time I'll wait, there's no urgence to prove my account isn't related to that vandal. So far only you gave a reply to my help request, so thank you for your time. 5.170.47.88 20:22, 17 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Excuse me, is it really just a matter of time or have you left the discussion? 5.170.47.159 07:06, 26 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

It really is a matter of time. Whilst I’m committed to the work of wikis, my priority is my family, job, and financial obligations - nothing I do here will pay my mortgage or my utility bills or buy food for my family. Before I can form a conclusion on your request, I need to look at all the evidence, including but not limited to your contribution history. 49 edits are not easily reviewed, especially when I speak very little Italian. I also need to consult with other stewards and administrators, which is not something that happens very quickly, because they have their own priorities too. All I can confirm is that I’m still looking through your request. --Green Giant (talk) 10:32, 26 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

In this case, thank you again. Please look at all the evidences and consult with other stewards and sysops, this will just confirm better my innocence. Also consider the fact that I wrote perfect Italian when talking with Italian sysops, which should exclude I'm a Polish psycho if my logs and my reverts of that troll's edits weren't sufficient. I won't disturb you again, I'll just wait for your future answer. 5.170.47.205 17:25, 26 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
