statistics on the Main Page

On the main page of the English Wikisource it says: "We now have 783,122 texts in the English language library". It is less clear how many of these texts are in a final form; meaning ready for casual readers. The pages linked to the proof read tool indicate 691 completed pages and 3588 pages ready for proofreading. This does not imply that there are 691 text that are ready.

"783,122 texts" is wrong, as that stat includes chapters. Is there a way to count all the pages and exclude the pages which are a chapter (sub-page) without excluding texts within a collection (also a sub-page). John Vandenberg ^(chat) 11:18, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

I can't think of an easy way to do that. We could probably set up a new hidden category to list all works, automatically from the header template for basepages and manually opt-in for all of the subpages, then replace the page count with a count of items in that category. The hard part will be manually adding the subpages. In fact, adding the subpages is the hard part in any system I can imagine. There is no way to automatically discern subpages-as-works-in-their-own-right from chapters and other subdivisions. I guess a bot could tag the most likely subpages, such as every article under Popular Science Monthly, which would be a start but probably wouldn't be entirely accurate. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 11:56, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

stats.wikimedia has a figure of 263,092 articles which seems to me more realistic. I don't know how they compute that figure or how you could get it on an updatable basis. Chris55 (talk) 16:53, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

Only marginally related, but I started a list sometime ago, in the hopes to create something similar to the featured article list at en.wp, which is here. It needs to be maintained similar to the featured and en.wp and does not give the statistic, but can help showing our "finished" products. - Theornamentalist (talk) 20:26, 11 July 2012 (UTC)

I see Phe-bot calculates an "All texts" figure daily, which currently stands at 260,687. It is stored at Template:ALL TEXTS. Would this be a suitable replacement for the current figure? It also calculates PR TEXTS which I assume means proofread, (currently 54,487) and that could be posted somewhere else. Chris55 (talk) 08:17, 14 July 2012 (UTC)

Main categories

Now that we have a much better structured Portal system, isn't it the time to direct new users to that rather than the category system for finding their way around Wikisource? How about a carefully chosen subset of useful portals? Chris55 (talk) 07:57, 12 July 2012 (UTC)

I agree with you, but I'd mantain the links to Category:Authors, Category:Works, Wikisource:Authors, and Wikisource:Works. However I'd make a complete redesign of the Main Page, since its current version was introduced four years ago. "Welcome to" Headings

Could we adjust Template:Main Page header to not use headings at all, or at least not use the level 1 heading. If the latter, change the level 1 to a level 2 and remove the existing level 2, but I'd prefer not to have either of these as headers. Wikipedia doesn't have this problem.

What is the problem? If you have "Auto-number headings" Preference on, currently the page looks like this:

Esperanto Interwiki (2)

The interwiki to eo.wikisource seems to have disappeared. Could someone please add it again? (It's [[eo:Ĉefpaĝo]]--Frglz (talk) 16:42, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

We've reduced the list of interwikis to the "top 30" by size and then added a link at the end of the list to the complete list. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 22:53, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Interwikies

Hi. I wanted to ask you to add Macedonian interwiki on the main page (it has over 2.500 articles, more than some of the current interwikies), but I saw the note above that only "top 30" Wikisources are added. However, there is a problem regarding this. You have to remove the following: Breton, Danish, Estonian, Indonesian, Latin, Malayalam, Norwegian and Venetian, most of them are far beneath the "first 30" line. Otherwise, you have to add Macedonian and Esperanto ad well. It's not fair. Same goes for the iw of the recent change. --MacedonianBoy (talk) 20:41, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
