The Weird Tales indices use the following format:

Issues edit

Each issue is represented by a second-level heading with the cover date. The cover of the issue will be visible on the right of each entry if in the public domain; if not, a box with copyright renewal information will take its place. Each issue is described in this format:

Volume x, Issue y (scan index)
Cover art by Artist's Name
Edited by Editor's Name
  • Item 1
  • Item 2
  • etc...

The volume and issue number will link to a proofread version of the issue where available; in these cases, the template {{Small scan link}} will also be present. Cover art, editor information and other issue-wide information will be shown between the issue number and the bulleted list of contents (if this is consistant throughout the year, it will be in the notes section of the header instead). Items refer to each text within the issue; these will be linked to the appropriate text if it is in the public domain.

Items edit

Each text in an issue is listed as bullet points in this format:

  • Title • Author's Name • Format
  • Title [Part n on n; *Series Name]• Author's Name [as Pseudonym] • Format (Note)

In some cases the format is abbreviated as follows:

  • n. - serialised/complete novel
  • na - novella
  • nv - novelette
  • ss - short story
  • vi - vignette (listed under "short fiction" in the magazines' contents pages)
  • e  - essay/article
  • v  - verse

Additional information is occasionally provided in square brackets. For example:

  • [Part n on n] - indicates which part of a serialised story is contained in the issue.
  • [*Series Name] - indicates that this is part of a series featuring or related to "Name."
  • [as Pseudonym] - indicates that the author is known to have used a pseudonym, the text was ghost written or similar.

For example, from January 1936:

  • The Hour of the Dragon [Part 2 of 5; *Conan] • Robert E. Howard • novel

The title of the story is "The Hour of the Dragon"; it was serialised in five parts of which this is the second; it is part of the Conan series; the author is Robert E. Howard; it is a novel.

For example, from September-October 1941:

  • The Half-Haunted [*Judge Keith Hilary Pursuivant] • Manly Wade Wellman [as Gans T. Field] • short story

The title of the story is "The Half-Haunted"; it is part of the Judge Keith Hilary Pursuivant series; the author is Manly Wade Wellman writing under the name Gans T. Field; it is a short story.

Copyright edit

Copyright renewals for individual contributions to an issue, where known, are listed after the appropriate item in the indices.

For example, from September-October 1941:

Another link: Collector's Showcase. This is actually a french site but it lists the contents of each issue with the english titles; it's easy enough to understand and navigate. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 00:52, 11 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Change to the format and structure? edit

I would suggest formatting the page in the manner of McClure's Magazine and using subpages for each year (or perhaps each volume, which seem to be in six issues sets). - AdamBMorgan (talk) 01:09, 11 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

@AdamBMorgan: Seems like this suggestion was taken in two directions, with some using one structure and others using another. Should probably be fixed at some point. -Pete (talk) 09:08, 4 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Beardo: This seems like something you might have a perspective on, do you have a preference between Weird Tales/Volume 1/Issue 1/Title as a naming convention or Weird Tales/1923/Title, or another variant? -Pete (talk) 22:34, 10 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Pete - I don't recall seeing any individual enties using Weird Tales/year/title - certainly most seem to use Weird Tales/Volume 1/Issue 1/Title - so I think that should continue as the format. Yes, the listings use Weird Tales/year. That is a bit inconsistent. But the listings do show the volume and issue numbers, and the individual items should show the years - so it is fairly easy to go between the two. I would think trying to change either would involve a lot of work, and personally, I don't think it is worth it. Have I missed some problem with the way it is now ? -- Beardo (talk) 01:00, 11 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Beardo Ah you're right, it is just the volumes and not the stories themselves that use the year format. To my eye that's almost as confusing as having inconsistency among the stories, and it doesn't seem all that hard to fix...but, I'm not all that invested in these stories, so I'll defer to somebody who has a more sustained interest. Thanks for taking a look. -Pete (talk) 02:38, 11 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Abbreviations edit

The French site, which I am using as a base for these indices, uses abbreviations such as "ss" and "vi" after the title and author to indicate the length of the piece. Cross referencing this with the American Miskatronic Press site, which seems to be based on the actual contents pages of Weird Tales, I worked out what they meant (eg. "short story" and "short fiction"). However, I was wrong and will soon be going through the subpages making corrections. In fact, I'll be expanding the abbreviations (there is no real need for "ss" when it can simply read "short story"). Until then, however, some of the abbreviations may be incorrect (the French site does not have lengths for all of the pieces). The abbreviations are apparently fairly standard and list can be found here. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 18:46, 2 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Scanned version & verification edit

Moved from the talk page for the 1940 subpage:-

There is no scanned version connected with this page. How is another editor to verify the content? Thanks, Mattisse (talk) 22:24, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

I haven't really been thinking of this as a text so there is no scanned version to be proofread. In fact, the only print version I have is still under copyright; although it could be argued to be non-copyrightable information for the most part. However, this page and all of the subpages have external links to sites that provide similar contents lists and additional information (there are probably more on the internet if you require addituional verification). The copyright information comes from the sources listed in the {{PD-US-no renewal}} template: Pennsylvania copyright records scans and the U.S. Copyright Office. These pages are a synthesis of the webistes' information so you should be able to use them to verify the content.
My purposes in adding these indices to Wikisource are:
  1. As a framework to link scans of individual issues. I have already done this for the September 1941. There should be more eventually but this takes even longer than I had expected. Having each public domain issue on Wikisource is an aspiration but not one I expect to be fulfilled in the near future (early issues cost a lot).
  2. To show copyright information that could be useful for myself and Wikisource in general. This is why the copyright information is prominent throughout. It is useful to know which items are copyrighted and which should be in the public domain. Related to this, redlinks show which texts can be added to Wikisource in the future. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 16:43, 7 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Available scanned copies edit

http://tentaclii.wordpress.com/2014/07/06/weird-tales/ has some links to scans of Weird Tales. They'd need editing for copyrighted material before posting--e.g. Fane of the Black Pharaoh is in one of them--but seems like they should be valuable. Any reason they shouldn't be posted on Commons after a quick editing for copyright?--Prosfilaes (talk) 09:46, 10 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

They look usable, thanks for linking to them. There was only one that needed no redaction, so I have set it up as Index:Weird Tales volume 30 number 01.djvu. I will redact parts of the other later and upload them too (I need to use my home computer for this; I'm currently using a work computer). - AdamBMorgan (talk) 11:50, 16 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think I've got all the redactions done properly; although it was a bit awkward in places. They should be up at:
Which should be everything from Tentaclii/Archive.org on Wikisource now. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 17:08, 31 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

https://archive.org/download/weird-tales_complete_archive - the complete list of issues on Archive.org as of 2021. Don’t for get to check the copyright status of the issue and its contents before adding. --Nonexyst d 18:48, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

That's not the complete list; for example, it's missing volumes 3 and 4. https://archive.org/details/weirdtalesmagazine has those volumes, and possibly all of the early ones, if poorly organized. I bought a collection off Ebay, so I can probably upload a copy of any missing issues. The big thing stopping me from going forward is the work to make a good upload and the fact I'm unwilling to upload issues with renewed chunks hacked out.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:46, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Copyright day 2019, and a Commons link edit

Just making a note here in case anyone is interested…

Since Weird Tales began in 1923, we now (2019) have the full first volume unambiguously out of of copyright; and every year going forward we will get another full volume. This might be a good opportunity to start a systematic effort to get it transcribed in full.

Also, I just ran across this page on Commons: c:Weird Tales. Good overview—and up to date as of 2019—of the copyright status of the magazine. --Xover (talk) 05:12, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

The volume numbering of Weird Tales was weird; after 31 years of publishing, they were on volume 46 when the first run ended in 1954. Also, Commons is not entirely up to date; December 1923 - January 1924 was published in 1923, as the renewal makes clear.
I've uploaded the first few 1923 Weird Tales, but I haven't finished the run, since I was still working on the first issue and didn't see any point in loading more work before the first is done.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:48, 1 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
