Hi, Allan, I just deleted the page you requested. The Wikisource page for deletion requests is at Wikisource:Proposed deletions. I have a favor of my own to ask: I know our documentation is pretty poor, and I would like to rewrite some of it. Wikisource:Speeches edit

Hi, Allan. The links are correct for the speeches by the presidents and prime ministers (they belong in the "Wikisource:" namespace). But it appears that I overlooked them in assembling my list of non-main namespace articles that need to be copied over here. You might as well just copy the pages manually over to here. The Librarian Project edit

I created this project with that initial purpose. I knew that it was already the expectations of high users. Zhaladshar had the idea of adding the polict pages on the project and use it as a policy page. Its final use is not yet decided. I have just added one assignment. I think that this project may be used to adress the most important modifications that need to be made. The Scriptorium can also be used for that purpose. Therefore, the final decision for the main purpose of the project has not yet been decided.

The Speeches portal looks really great! Now that the holidays are done I ned get back to my own project. I have two suggestions. First you could put the best or most famous section of the speech in the featured box and not neccessarily the beginning. Also, in the categories box you could split up the categories with sub-headers like Nationality or Topic. About the proposed {{header}} standard

My intentions with the WikiProject on infrastructural and guidance development were mentioned at the scriptorium under "WikiProject IGD", and the standardised header was proposed on the WikiProject IGD talk page under "Standardised page infobox". Discussion ensued there and in the official #wikisource IRC channel between BirgitteSB, Apwoolrich, ThomasV, and myself. I'm placing it on a large number of pages (per agreement on #wikisource) to test it's flexibility outside controlled tests. Once I finish splitting a book (using the header), I'll invite discussion on the IRC and WikiProject channel, and implement any changes we judge desirable. You're welcome to comment on it at the WikiProject talk page, and we can implement any beneficial changes immediately. Footnotes edit

Hi. If you have seen my half- finished translation on the Tao te Ching now available on Wikisource, you will be able to read on the introduction that these footnotes are supplements to the text wheareas I felt that certain words/phrases needed more explanation than that can be directly received from the text itself. I originally intended to attach such footnotes directly to the bottom of the translation itself but did not manage to do this, so I resorted to the plan of a separate page instead. Can you possibly advise me on how to do this in order to improve my page? Or is it already within the Wikisource project page you gave me and which I'll check out in a minute?

Also, as an additional question of interest, I find it really strange that users such as yourself are able to detect new work so quickly and contact their editors. How exactly do you manage this? Or is this a work assigned to you by Wikisource? I hope you will have patience with my curiosity.

Tao te Ching edit

Hi. I'm really glad that my clarifaction of the book has helped you. On the naming policy of Lao Tzu/Laozi, however, I personally stick to the Pinyin version in private conversations as I am a native Chinese speaker who learnt Pinyin in Junior school, and thus under the perhaps strange impression that Pinyin naming policies are somewhat more 'respectable' for the Chinese cultural heritage than mere sound translations. I remember feeling very shocked and even slightly offended when I discovered that Laozi was actually most often known as Lao Tzu. However for the sake of the latter being more well- known in public I have proclaimed the author of the Tao as Lao Tzu, although from a Chinese point of view I would say that this translation sounds not at all like the way it is properly pronounced in Chinese- it's just much easier to say for English speakers.

As far as the Wikipedian policy goes, contributors to the encyclopedia have a divided opinion which you can find on the talk page of the Tao te Ching. However I do know that the article concerning its author named him Laozi and not otherwise. Hope this helps. --Luthinya 12:23 30 January 2006

Again thanks for your watchful eye. I have looked at my Hansard photocopy and notice SHEEHAN appears in capitals not bold (Captain (and not Mr.) in normal type). I have added many links to Wpedia, hope this is permitted (not forseen in Hansard !). I feel confident in saying I am 100% on proof reading. However I admit to making two (I think) paragraph breaks not in Hansard as the text became far too long. Do you think this needs mentioning?

I have added a second speech (the last for the present) which was his main life's work, housing the working rural community. The speech reflects this well. Again this was one text block in Hansard, I have made three paragraphs out of it. Otherwise the text is letter exact.

Lastly, I have moved to "Irish" for both. Another reason, as there is a fine Gladstone speech on Irish Home Rule in there, so all three fall together under "I". That's it from me for today Osioni 21:28, 1 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Everything understood, but before getting locked out I took another close look at my Hansard copies and noticed that all paragraphs and speaker's name begin two letters in, which I have now adopted. I have added one further link, from Labour leader to w:J.Connolly if that is ok?
A further small question: nowadays MP is written without a 'dot', a couple of decades ago as: MP. and in Sheehan's time as M.P. Question: Which version to use (in the WP I have people changing back and forth). Next point: Hansard writes: labourers' dwellings -- I have typed labourer's dwellings -- again which to use, the 1911 style or present day ? (this came up in the other speech as well).
My point with the "I" was to have the speeches list together under "I" in both British and Irish Speeches (previously the one began with "Anti" in front). If Gladstone does not get completed in the meantine, I will make a copy when in London in May.Osioni 18:15, 2 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why? I thought WikiSource was the proper location for original documents.

Since you'd argued that speeches were fair use, User:Wolfman had also argued that United Nations Resolutions would be at least fair use while they are now under a non-commercial license at Template:UNCopyright. This is why I am confused while fair use and non-commercial licenses may trouble us should a downstream user copies our contributions for commercial sales thinking that we release them by GFDL without checking original copyright status, gets sued while his use is extremely unfair, and comes back here to blame us for misleading him even though we may not be legally guilty.--Jusjih 15:48, 13 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Template:Locked edit

Hi,

I've been placing them at the bottom simply because I've been placing the {{textquality}} templates down there when I proof EB1911 pages. My personal preference is to place templates (if at all possible) below all of the text so that if admins edit/people view the source code, they'll get the text first and then all the templates we use to indicate certain statuses at the very bottom (because I'm assuming that most people aren't looking for them). I'd think seeing the template in the top-right corner would be enough of a tip-off that we could afford to place the actual template at the bottom. Besides, I'm sure most people wouldn't really know what the locked template is for, anyway, even if they do look at the source code. Category:British Speeches edit

Hi. I notice you do a lot of work on British Speeches. Do you think it would be worth splitting the British Speeches category in some manner - perhaps splitting by century? Currently there are 121 articles in the category with nothing to distinguish ones made in the 18th Century from ones in the 21st, which makes navigation a little dificult. The one problem I see at the moment with recategorisation is that an administrator will have to do it as many articles are currently locked. Please let me know what you think. Thanks. Gladstone Home Rule Speech edit

Hello again. My attempt in London to locate the original speech was in vain, the debate began two days after the 7th April posted in the WS with another equally long speech. I had more time recently in Dublins's National Library, and browsed through enless days of dabates (and a further very long speech by Gladstone) on the Bill, through May and into June 1886 when it turned up 7th June (which I have corrected on the page)

I had the speech copied, 13 Hansard pages two columns a page. I feel my task, time and troublewise, fulfilled, and have many other priorities preventing me inputting the full speech, much as it impresses me. My suggestion is to mail a copy to some POB. Do you know anything authorative about preferences for em-dashes being an American vs British issue? Or is it just just modern to use them and old fashioned to use en-dashes? From the limited research I did—with no authoritative results—it would seem that the British convention is to use em dashes with spaces or hair spaces. I've created {{}} for the hair space variant, and added it to A Drink Problem, which you've contributed. Thanks for the work on A Drink Problem, I don't think the em dahes you've added have come out as intended. On the article and {{}} they've come out surrounded by wee boxes ( — ). I'm assuming this is a computer character recognition problem as I've never seen this in any printed form. Generally where a longer em dash is used there doesn't seem to be any British standard usage on spaces or not. Hansard uses em dash without spaces, the times uses it with spaces (when they don't use - ). I think Hansard sources the em dash could be useful but we'd need to get rid of the wee boxes. It seems there's little consensus, then. Various websites I've consulted seem to recommend the em dash. For example, Wikipedia, dictionary.com, and A List Apart note that en dashes are for linking ranges or particular compound words (ie, 1920–1930 or Asia–Pacific alliance). The same sites recommend em dashes to "indicate a break in thought or sentence structure, to introduce a phrase added for emphasis, definition, or explanation, or to separate two clauses (dictionary.com).
The most common British usage seems to be em dashes, either spaced or unspaced. Hair spaces (as used by {{}}) seem to be a good compromise; they are often used in British texts, and they aren't much different from unspaced usage. According to A List Apart, though, rendering hair spaces on the web is problematic; they don't seem to be defined in HTML. We already have Darwin's "Origin of Species", and I have just imported Lister's work On the Antiseptic Principle of the Practice of Surgery, and I am going to hunt down more. Re: "British" vs "Scottish/English" edit

Hi, sorry it has been so long since you messaged me. I have a few massive projects I'm undertaking at the moment, so haven't had any time to devote to Select British Eloquence, or wikisource in general. I would have no objection to you changing the categories of those speeches to which a change would be appropriate, bearing in mind that sometimes it might be very POV to classify one way or the other: if a Scottish lord were speaking in the English parliament (or later, a Scottish MP in any british parliament), would it be an English, Scottish, or British speech? Bearing in mind that the speech-giver is Scottish, does that make the speech itself (though given in the English houses) Scottish? The phrase "Scottish speeches" has a subtle, but i think important, difference in connotation from "Speeches given by Scotsmen" or "Speeches given in Scotland". I'm uncomfortable dealing with these questions, so I just used the convenient label afforded by the book itself, "British Eloquence". If you feel more comfortable in differentiating in a NPOV way, please do so, I will have no objections.
