Some notes about poetry at Wikisource

edit

Hi, first allow me to add my welcome. I regularly look through the work of new contributors here, to see if there's suggestions that could be made. For the pages in Index:Six most excellent songs.pdf, there's a couple of things to tweak.

  1. Page header content such as page numbers is put in the smaller box above the long box where the text goes;
  2. Poetry needs to be laid out so that the line breaks are not swallowed by the page renderer. The simplest way of doing this is to wrap the text on each page in poem tags (<poem> ... </poem>). That way the line breaks are preserved.
  3. We also try to preserve the author's indents. The way to do that is to drop a {{gap}} template at the beginning of each indented line. More complex patterns of indentation than this poem need other tweaks, but we don't need to worry about that here.
  4. For title pages, we try to reproduce the general layout using combinations of templates, such as {{center}} and {{right}}.
  5. When an illustration is on a page, but a high-def version is not available, we insert {{missing image}} at the appropriate place and mark the page as "Problematic" (blue button). This adds the page to a list of pages that require the attention of someone with the appropriate skills.

I've adjusted the first couple of pages, so that you can see what I'm talking about.

I know I can be overly brief in some of my explanations, so if there's anything you need more clarity on, please ask on this page. I'll see your question and will come back to you (knowing that my time zone is UTC+12). Beeswaxcandle (talk) 02:12, 31 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
