Python script and formatting for ACIM edit

Would your Python script be difficult to adapt to A Course in Miracles? I have it all in docs. Thanks in advanced. --Remi 04:49, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Updates to UB text edit

I was planning to make some fixes to The Urantia Book and see you happen to have just been active in past day after not being active a while. I noticed some papers don't have italics, and I know there is now a "standard reference text", so I wanted to make updates to match the SRT. I already have this text on my computer, I'm working on a perl script to make it formatted for wikisource. What is this about djvu files that is needed? I've downloaded it too. Lukas (talk) 05:47, 17 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ok, I'm happy to say my script works. See Foreword of the book now as example, and compare to previous version for changes. The SRT from UF makes for tweaks to style in places that don't seem too important, thats many changes, such as punctuation going to within italics. i think this is technically the "correct" way though, on other hand I doubt eyes of anyone are good enough to tell if punctuation mark is italic or not. Also with style, use of true em dashes instead of "--", which is nice
More of substance, with SRT is also SRN (standard reference numbering) ... see how numbering changes now in section 2 as example. At para 0:4.3, look how the diff shows an "of" is removed, this is not the 1955 way but SRT decision to modify, so type of place to add footnote, I can work to do this I think automatically in some way. I do also see that two paragraphs in a row (0:3.11 and 0:3.12) start with the phrase "The First Source and Center", in second case, its suppose to be in italics in actuality, it appears tho italics put on first instance. I took look at djvu file too, it seems now it is matching with 1955 edition.
I have all files on my computer now to do same import into wikisource for other papers as with Foreword. I'm going to think a little first about other improvements with formating and whatnot to have the script output, since I don't want to have to submit 196 papers all over again (that will be slowest part). If you have ideas or a wishlist of improvements, I could have my script put in place hopefully, and save time. If you want to save headache for yourself of doing italics I think you can! Lukas (talk) 04:37, 19 January 2011 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the note about italics and punctuation marks, I hadn't seen that on wikipedia, but I see now what you are referring to. I don't think this will be a difficult adjustment to make. My hope is that in the next 1-2 weeks I wil be able to upload the papers to WS, and I will take this into account, also further ideas for improvements if they come up. Index:The Urantia Book, 1st Edition (1600dpi),.. series edit

Is it worth combining the works to be one djvu file rather than upload each chapter as a component? It would definitely make the construction of the work more complete, and have some continuity. — billinghurst sDrewth 07:29, 20 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

I echo Billinghurst's request above. It would be better to have a single djvu file rather than 198 separate files. The individual papers can be transcluded into the mainspace from a single file. If it's a file size problem, let me know and I'll talk with a couple of the experts here and see what we can do to assist. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:42, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I'm not sure what transclusion means (you want one big djvu file on Commons, and we "transclude" a few pages into the 198 papers on WS?). And yes, it is a file size problem: the original djvu file is about 523MB. I think even splitting it into thirds or fifths is too big, which is why I settled on splitting the djvu 198 times, and then uploading 198 files to Commons, and now setting up 198 pages on WS. Xaxafrad (talk) 08:42, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
"Transclusion" is the term we use for making the proofread pages from the page namespace show up in the mainspace. I've just had a look on Internet Archive and have found a copy there, and even the smaller 600dpi file is 192Mb and I don't want to think about the 2Gb pdf! I've asked one of the other admins for advice and we'll see what he thinks. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 09:14, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Hrmm, well, if a lower quality version would be better suited for splitting into 3 parts (I'm aware 2 would be sufficient, but 3 would make contextual sense, for continuity), then, ummm, I don't know. I've finished setting up about 27 papers this evening; I should be able to finish the rest this week (sorry for the hiatus, I get distracted easily). What's wrong with what I'm doing? I does get tedious making 200 edits to ensure uniformity, but such is the problem for the pages at The Urantia Book. Xaxafrad (talk) 09:28, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
One problem is that in splitting up the file the text layer has gone missing. This means that someone is going to have to recreate the text layer in all of the files before proofreading can commence. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 09:40, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, I'm someone...how hard is it to re-create a text layer? ....as I search the web to find out.... Xaxafrad (talk) 18:45, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I just tried a different djvu viewer, and it said it can't search because no document has any text information. I've found a little proggie that can create OCR'd djvu files from tiffs and djvus and other options. It runs really slow, but I think it'll work (I'm still waiting for the first result file). Xaxafrad (talk) 19:54, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Xaxafrad, you should first be running these file parts at http://any2djvu.djvuzone.org/ before uploading them to Commons to apply the missing (and now split-up) text-layers via their OCR engine. Kindly re-do the existing files you've uploaded and status-ed as needing a text-layer in this manner and please do this to any DjVu file that you know beforehand to be lacking a text layer in the future. -- George Orwell III (talk) 20:20, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Gotcha. While I fiddle with any2dvju and the internet archive, how about I RfD every page I've incorrectly put up here and on Commons? Any ideas to expedite the process? Xaxafrad (talk) 21:04, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Why? I think all that is needed is once the existing DjVu has been OCRD'd via Any2DjVu is to upload the finished DjVu over the existing flawed DjVu on Commons and then change the related Index: for that DjVu's status to needs proofreading instead of needs OCR here on Wikisource. Now am I missing something else here? What does IA still have to with this once the file has been split into smaller (~198) djvu's? -- George Orwell III (talk) 22:05, 13 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I don't really know what I'm doing (either here, or anywhere else). I'm just trying to follow your examples and suggestions. I fed Any2DjVu a PDF from IA, the resulting DjVu with OCR turned out to be about 45MB, so it's already up at Commons in 1 file. The lower resolution 600 DPI seems perfectly readable. Once I can get the files cleaned up on Commons, I'll start cleaning up what's here on WS. Xaxafrad (talk) 00:47, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
I've made this entire series obsolete. Please delete them and accept my apologies for wasting your time and effort. There's now a new index that includes all 2100 pages at once. Any suggestions for that one while I start browsing MoS pages and other Featured works? Xaxafrad (talk) 01:02, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Ahh... much better! I had thought you were not going to move away from breaking the book up into 198 individual papers no matter what. My mistake. So yes, if you now have the entire book as 1 file on commons and as 1 Index: page here on Wikisource, then by all means go ahead on requesting the deletion of all the previous files uploaded to Commons prior to this new file first from the folks over on Commons. We'll delete the corresponding Indexes here afterwards or in the interim. -- George Orwell III (talk) 01:09, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Sweet, I'm already working in that direction. Thanks!
Also, is there one or two examples or MoS pages you would suggest to emulate for formatting purposes? Xaxafrad (talk) 01:15, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Try WS:Style. I'll also have a go at a couple of pages. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:37, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I appreciate that. I'll follow your formatting lead. Between you and me, you're the expert ;) Xaxafrad (talk) 06:31, 15 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Formatting templates edit

In reply to your edit summary on Help:Beginner's guide to proofreading, the best current list of formatting templates is Help:Templates. I haven't included it anywhere yet because I only found that page a few days ago; it was not categorised as a help page. I haven't checked to see if it covers everything, it might need expansion or supplemental pages. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 12:39, 14 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Ooooo, that's a nice page. Thanks! Xaxafrad (talk) 06:20, 15 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Urantia Book in the mainspace edit

Hi, this question is just so I can help you further with the Table of Contents in the DjVu file. Are you thinking of using the proofread text to replace the current mainspace version, or are you thinking of a new version that would sit alongside? My personal preference would be the first option, but it's up to you. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:11, 17 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

The 1st option sounds good to me. *thumbs up* :) Xaxafrad (talk) 05:42, 18 September 2012 (UTC)Reply
OK. I'll have a go at sorting the links in the Table of Contents so that they point to the mainspace rather than the page namespace. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:31, 18 September 2012 (UTC)Reply

Category deletion request edit

Hi, if you would like me to rename Category:Urantia Book to something that names the movement, I'm happy to do so. I think the problem with it as it stands is that it's targeted at the book rather than the movement. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:42, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure that's needed until there are more texts, possibly court papers, or publicly released essays or memoirs, I guess. Rename or delete, I vote delete; it's easy to create a new one. Xaxafrad (talk) 08:00, 2 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Urantia Book 1st Edition continued proofreading edit

Hi! I noticed you've been a major editor for Index:The Urantia Book, 1st Edition.djvu, and I was wondering if you're still active on WS and would be interested in help think through some formatting conventions so we aren't all doing things different and undoing each other's work?

Thanks and God bless! Brad606 (talk) 21:59, 26 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
