Difference from Wikisource:What Wikisource includes? edit

I found this page from the Scriptorium. I was wondering what this covers that we don't already say at Wikisource:What Wikisource includes#Excerpts. It seems like it's just saying we don't want fragments and gives various rationales for that statement. To me we could just redirect this to WS:WWI and not try to make this a guideline or policy.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 14:45, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Support redirect. More unnecessary instruction creep. Moondyne (talk) 14:54, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think excerpts and extracts overlap a bit here. The way I read it - it is not just about disallowing the fragments of a larger [missing] whole but excluding the condensed or abridged variants of a [complete] base work (think Reader's Digest here). While its true some of these variants might also be legitimately published, etc., I don't think we'd want to host them without having the full, unaltered originals in place as well. -- George Orwell III (talk) 15:40, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

It is meant to cover both but I can't seem to word it properly. My initial concern was that pages were being deleted for variations on this reason without any actual policy (or even a guideline or essay) to back it up. Aside from being bad procedure, it's unfair and demoralising for potentially diligent users to be punished for breached secret, unwritten rules. Note that when I started this page there was nothing about extracts on WS:WWI. If this is no longer necessary, I can always convert it into an essay; I think we need more of them to flesh out and explain the rules. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 23:38, 27 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
