Possible entries

At User:John Carter I have gotten together a list of at least some PD reference sources which are still at least as 1986, when the book I was using came out, still comparatively highly regarded. I think some of them, maybe like one of the Victoria history books dealing with parts of Britain, or maybe some of the others, might be worth consideration for inclusion. Yeah, it is a huge list, and I've only checked archive.org (and so far only archive.org) for the titles through "D", but they do seem to cover a rather broad area. Personally, as a weird one, I might think Baring-Gould's "Book of Wer-wolves" might be one of the more unique items. And it might not be a bad idea, if a file for them can be found, to include at least one old short story magazine. I personally tend to think that some of those sources, which have shorter works individual editors can accomplish on their own, might be among the better types of works for us to include in general, because we can give separate pages to those short stories and other short works here, which places like archive.org are rather less likely to do, generally in favor of a single pdf for the entire issue. What about A Dictionary of Slang, Jargon & Cant (1889), vol. 1? It has simple formatting and characters with a subject that should be generally interesting. I only spot-checked your list, instead of looking at each link, but many had some complicated characters or would be harder than the other texts on the list. I like some of the place name works for English counties but I'm not sure how many other people would be interested. I'm not sure who the target audience is of this contest but, assuming some new editors might give it a go, I've tried to choose new texts. We already have a Gutenberg copy-and-paste version of The Book of Were-Wolves, which should probably be replaced some day but might not be fulfilling for a new user's first experience of proofreading. Well, I have many suggestions among my pet projects. ;o) What about one of the book of Gandhi or/and Ruskin?

I've added one reference source, one Gandhi and an Amazing Stories (I chose a late one as a subtle reminder that the public domain didn't stop with 1923). That also means we have 4 existing indexes and 3 newly added ones (which are all part of someone's project so they hopefully won't be abandoned). A suggestion: Foggerty’s Fairy and other tales by W. S. Gilbert. It is one of Gilbert’s lesser-known works, but makes for interesting reading. Other possibilities include Rainbow Valley, by L. M. Montgomery and The Art of Public Speaking, by Dale Carnegie and Joseph Berg Esenwein. Illustrations and other bits

I've added as many illustrations as I have had time to process to Commons. I am still working on a lot more of these. I had hoped to have everything done before the competition launched but it was not to be. If an image appears to be missing, I will have it up soon. I have all of the files I need to do every single illustration, it just takes time to process them. Sorry for any inconvenience. If this works, ...

I think it might be useful for, say, maybe, the start of next year?, to maybe start some sort of regular ongoing contest, maybe in some ways similar to wikipedia:Wikipedia:WikiCup. I have no idea how to deal with the fact that some books have significantly longer and more complicated pages than others, or some other matters, but if we could get some sort of friendly competition going I can't think it would be a bad thing. Results

The results may take a few days to be checked. I had been compiling a list of edits as the contest went along and the overall winner seems quite obvious.
