How to Validate all pages of an Index page to " Not Proofread"? edit

{{Help me}} I'm trying to find out how to validate all pages at once of this page: here, so that I can view all pages within the book2scroll client. Is there a short and easy way of doing this, or would one have to go through all pages individually and validate them? Oryang7 (talk) 10:39, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

You cannot validate all pages at once, that would not be considered a second proofread of the page. One page at a time, checking the editable text against the respective text in the image. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:48, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I mispoke, I meant changing the page status of all pages to "Not Proofread" so all pages are loaded at once to be proofread on the book2scroll client Oryang7 (talk) 14:19, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
If you just want to read the book you can use the bookreader at Internet Archive. Here on Wikisource we transcribe and format (called Proofreading) the work page by page, comparing it to the scanned page image as we go, and then a second person double-checks the transcription (called Validating); all before we call the work "finished".
I really recommend that you read some of the documentation linked from Help:Contents, and in the standard welcome message I will shortly post below, to better understand what Wikisource is and how we work. In particular, you may want to read Help:Proofread and Help:Page status. Merely reproducing the automatically generated OCR text in a wikipage has little value over just reading it at the Internet Archive (it'd be the exact same text, and their book reader is nicer). Xover (talk) 15:14, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Page:Dawn of the Day.pdf/37 is not remotely what we call "Proofread". A Proofread page should have all spelling and punctuation corrected, proper paragraph divisions, and formatting applied such that the wikipage matches the scanned page image.
I also wonder why you rapidly created all the Page:-namespace pages for this work with uncorrected OCR text when you were adviced that that was not an appropriate thing to do. Such text is not usable for anything here, and preemptively creating them prevents things like improved OCR from a new version of the scan.
Please read the documentation to which you have been provided links, and ask for assistance if you are uncertain about something. Wikisource:Scriptorium/Help will be a suitable venue for requesting assistance with most such issues. Xover (talk) 12:04, 14 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry, I didn't understand that formatting, typographical errors, etc must be corrected before a page is set to "Not Proofread", I thought that a page must be created then corrected in the proofreading phase, hence my eagerness to create the rest of the pages, to then be proofread. As you stated that improved OCR is no longer possible with current version of the "Dawn of the Day" Index, is it possible to create a fresh Index of the same file, whilst transferring some of the corrections (to spelling and format) that I made to some of the pages after reading your advice? Could you also check some of the pages, that I corrected, to see If there are some corrections I missed? (Page:Dawn of the Day.pdf/6 and Page:Dawn of the Day.pdf/7) Thanks, and I'll be sure to consult help from the Scriptorium from now on. Oryang7 (talk) 12:50, 15 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Potter's Aeschylus edit

If you find you need assistance getting the formatting to work, please let me know, and I will help. It will be nice to have Potter's Aeschylus here. --EncycloPetey (talk) 03:55, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Cool, will do! Oryang7 (talk) 04:01, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
With regard to overfloats, as seen here, 'STR' is slightly higher than the rest of the text on the same line, so how would advise fixing the formatting such that it's level? Oryang7 (talk) 05:26, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
There are a few things I would do. Give me a few minutes with the page. --EncycloPetey (talk) 05:33, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
The vertical alignment of the "STR." appears to default to "top". This may require an additional parameter to be introduced into the temple, but I'm going to try a workaround. Note that, for works in verse, we start each line on a separate line, rather than running all the text together as we do in prose works. You can also format footnotes to be smaller automatically by using {{smallrefs}}, instead of applying a fint size to the text of the footnotes. --EncycloPetey (talk) 05:44, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
You should also decide whether you're going to use straight or curly quotes, and use them consistently. Both styles of quotes are mixed on a single page right now. --EncycloPetey (talk) 05:47, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

I needed to move the Base page. The Tragedies of Aeschylus is the title of multiple works, and so would need to be disambiguated. It should be set now to Tragedies of Aeschylus (Potter 1812). --EncycloPetey (talk) 17:01, 29 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Please use meaningful names for uploads and Index pages.. edit

Hi, thanks for your recent uploads related to translations of Plato.

It would be appreciated if you would consider using more meaningful names, and using the {{book}} template at Commons. The IA-upload tool will fill in a lot of the meta-data for you, which makes it much easier to set up the Index: page here.

Also, Please consider using roman numerals for page numbering for front matter, such as prefaces, TOC etc; as is commonplace in many editions, rather than worded entries, if there are no explicit page numbers visible. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:36, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hi, sorry for not making meaningful names, I'll do that from now on.
In regards to using the '{book}' template, I know how to make Index pages by creating a new page in the following format "Index:[File Name]", however, when you say to use the '{book}' template in the creation of index pages is this done using a preceding "Index:" + 'Meaningful Name', or do I just create a new page with the 'Meaningful Name' and then use the template within that created page? If the latter, how do I link the file from Wikimedia to the page itself as I can see that the page overview parameter links individual pages or a gallery, but not a file? Oryang7 (talk) 09:24, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
Please ask for help on the Scriptorum, for assistance in naming uploads (and retitling existing uploads/Index pages.)

Generally it's best to get the "meaningful" name right at Commons when uploading.

If you are using the {{Book}} template at Commons, then when you create the Index: page here it should import and set up the Index page automatically, when you ask to create [[Index:<filename>]] assuming it doesn't already exist. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:32, 2 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hathi links... edit

Thanks for including the Catlog record links.

However, in order that certain tools here at Wikisource can work (such as pagelist importation and the script used for hi-res scan viewing) you should ideally also be providing links of the form https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.31175010163288 being the ID of the actual scans used. This form of link should be the first entry in a Source field , with the catlog record as the second.

Provision of these assists the workflow tools a number of contributors use to improve productivity, as well as making it much easier to identify which specifc edition has been used, where a catalog record provided multiple alternatives. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:10, 5 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Ah, sorry about that I'll go through and update the uploads I sourced from there, with both links. Oryang7 (talk) 02:07, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Check URL - File:The Republic of Plato, 1st ed. (Vaughan, 1852).pdf edit

The URL given for this links to a 1935 edition, and it seems the metdata in the Catalog record linked at Hathi does also. Can you check where the scan actually came from? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:05, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about that, I've fixed the link. Oryang7 (talk) 10:30, 6 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

CSS widths 100% + padding edit

Hi! Just a tip about using CSS like this: <div style="width: 100%; padding: 0px 5px 0px 20px;">. By default, margins and paddings are additional to the width, so doing this is guaranteed to cause the content to spill out of its container (in this case by 5+20=25px) and disappear off the right side of the screen. DIV elements always take the full width is you don't set a different display mode, so the 100% is implied and you can just get rid of the width and it should still fill the space.

Also, you do need to close DIV elements with </div>, or it upsets the linter.

Also, in this case, for such a short TOC, why do you need the height anyway? I can't get it to go taller than that, no matter how small I make the window. Inductiveloadtalk/contribs 09:03, 15 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Index:Axiochus (Spenser, 1592).pdf edit

Hi. In this work you have used {{gap}} to indent a paragraph. Please don't do that, we do not preserve that sort of typography, especially not in that means. You can also make your life a lot easier with formatting by simple using hard returns as the wiki will pick up and convert those nicely. Typically we would nt get fussed about the printers marks like A2 as they are just there for the cutters and bookbinders instructions, however, if you do wish to include them then you can poke them inside {{RunningHeader}} to get to a single line of formatted text. See special:diff/11959796/11965260. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 20:08, 22 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Double em-dash edit

Thank you for your work on The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. As a quick tip, a double em-dash should be proofread as {{bar|2}} Languageseeker (talk) 03:46, 13 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

Farming links edit

The Art of War (Neville) edit

When you moved The Art of War (Machiavelli) to The Art of War (Neville), you did not move any of the subpages, and broke the work. Please move all the remaining pages and correct any links in the headers. Moving a work requires that you move the entire work, not just its main page. --EncycloPetey (talk) 01:03, 13 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Are you vegetarian? —Genesis Bustamante (talk) 23:18, 24 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi. It would be more accurate to say Vegan (I think it's considered a subset of Vegetarianism?), but yeah. Why do you ask? Oryang7 (talk) 01:03, 25 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Because I checked your userpage and I saw it arranged with several links to books and essays with the theme of animal ethics, which I found fascinating. It made me realize that people had written about this is in the past, and that the ammount is abundant (in my eyes). I think that this work you are doing is great, as well as the work I've noticed that you've done to some author pages. —Genesis Bustamante (talk) 05:49, 25 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ah, cool thanks! Oryang7 (talk) 06:32, 26 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Encyclopedic content edit

Please do not accumulate lists of works not hosted here on Wikisource. Wikipedia has a section in their articles for them, or you can place them on the Talk pages. Our Versions and Translations pages are intended as lists of works hosted here, or that are in progress here. Long lists of items that are not hosted here make it hard for readers to find content. --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:54, 27 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Sorry. I'll add translations to already existing pages on Wikipedia or create Articles purely for them from now, as you advised. Oryang7 (talk) 03:35, 30 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Essays vol. 4 edit

Hi. c:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Essays, Vol 4 (Ives, 1925).pdf has been actioned finally, but that leaves Index:Essays, Vol 4 (Ives, 1925).pdf broken (and filling up maintenance categories). Any chance you could reupload the correct file at c:File:Essays, Vol 4 (Ives, 1925).pdf to fix it?

Incidentally, you can request speedy deletion for cases such as this, which bypasses the community discussion and usually happens much much faster. Another possible solution would have been to upload a new "version" of the file containing the correct volume. The first revision of the page would then have contained the wrong volume, but that's a minor issue. The big upside is that that way you could have fixed the problem entirely on your own without having to wait for overworked Commons admins to get around to it. In any case please let me (or WS:S/H) know if you need any help. Xover (talk) 13:34, 16 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely nominate for speedy deletion or--even before that--reupload a better version next time round. Oryang7 (talk) 06:54, 17 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
