Mediaeval Mind

Unterminated ref tags

Hi, Snafu22q, please be careful when using ref tags enclosed in angle brackets when you only mean to talk about the tag as an example, and not create a real footnote. In this edit at WS:Scriptorium/Help#Easy question about priorities, you wrote:

but this created a serious problem that didn't show up until much later, and wasn't easy to find.

Your edit worked fine by itself, as long as nobody else tried to use a real ref-tag as a footnote on the page after you. But then, another editor came along five discussion sections later (that would be me ) and used an actual ref tag pair to enclose a footnote in their post, with the result that the page was completely bolloxed, as the Wikimedia software read everything from your beginning ref-tag to my ending ref-tag as one giant footnote, swallowing the second half of your "Easy question" discussion, the four intervening discussions created after yours, and the first half of the "Law decree" discussion I was participating in, until it finally found the ending ref tag, and placed all of it into one, huge footnote, thus removing those four discussions from being rendered on the page and adding a big, red error message. You can see what it looked like after my comment was saved, in revision 13110105 of 18:41, 31 March 2023‎. There was nothing wrong with my post, and I was pretty confused that the whole section I replied to was gone from the page and the Table of Contents (not to mention the four discussions before that, but I didn't notice that right away). I thought maybe the discussion I was trying to reply to had maybe been archived or deleted while I was typing.

Took me a while to figure out that it was all just due to that one "ref" tag in your post, five discussions earlier. So, next time, please just write the word, "ref" without angle brackets (or use, "ref-tag" or the like), because if you use the real tag inside angle brackets, that triggers the software to recognize everything after it as footnote text, until the next end-ref tag (if there is one). If you know about HTML entities, you can write it this way:

•   <ref>, which comes out as <ref>, and won't screw up the page.

Or, just enclose the whole thing in <nowiki> tags, like this:

•   <nowiki><ref></nowiki> and it will come out like this: <ref> without messing with the page.

hws/hwe tagging

Hi there. Thanks for the validation you've done on some of the things I've proofread. I noticed that in some cases you've changed word breaks across pages from the simple (e.g. 'yest-' and 'erday') to {{hws|yest|yesterday}} and {{hwe|erday|yesterday}}). You don't need to do so, as the system stitches these words together. It does say this somewhere in the 'help' but in other places it still says use hws/hwe. Ultimately it's a matter of personal choice I suppose.

If the hyphenation at page end (or page beginning) requires different treatment you can use {{page end hyphen}} or {{unspaced page end}}.

I take the easier route as it saves a bit of time and effort. Regards, Chrisguise (talk) 08:18, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

OK, Chris, understood. I have also seen the system stitch together words at page end with no apparent problems. I will leave your edits of this type alone.

For me, however, I will continue to use the tagging (though it could have been done much simpler—I can't imagine why they did it this way—then again, nobody asked me; probably with good cause ;) ). I don't know if maybe there's something in the future that will be done that requires the tagging, or just because it works with what we see, maybe there's things that don't work if you leave it. If it isn't required and it's OK that we don't tag it, someone up the food chain should ensure that the hwe/s template pages should say so—in big letters. The text in the Help pages should also be amended.

I want to thank you for mentioning the 'unspaced page end' tag—doing edits in Wikisource in earnest only 7 months or so, I wasn't aware of its existence, but I was most assuredly aware of the problem of a page starting or ending with an emdash—so thank you!
