New Category: 1001 Children's books ...

Hey TayyabSaeed,

I can see how this would be neat to see what we have out of that list. I don't think that listing these books under our Category system is helpful though. Our system has been typically reserved for genre, publication date and technical stuff. A reason I can give you for maintaining this is simply that if, for example, Peter and Wendy turned up on a hundred somewhat notable lists or books as a suggested reading or something, the categories it would be under would be obviously too much. An option for collecting these works does exist; see Portal:Disney. If you notice, there is no category for these works as Disney. I think you should model it after this. I've also looked up this book you are referring to and it seems to be part of a series, some of which have Wikipedia article (w:1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die). Might I suggest creating an article, if possible, and if notable, for this publication you are building the list off of? That would certainly help make this list actually viable, rather than having the appearance of being some type of advertisement (although I guess that is hard to prove too, since you are sort of giving away its contents in the list). I was sort of waiting for this. In fact, I was surprised it took this long for somebody to come on here and give me the advice I was looking for. A few minutes after I created that category, it struck me that maybe I was doing something wrong. I had guessed later that categories would be for genre and all that stuff. I had thought about creating the article too. Anyway, thanks for the information about Portals. I will try to look into that. Meanwhile, what is going to happen with the existing category page? - TayyabSaeed (talk)

Here is my suggestion overall: first, move the list of works to one of your userpages and delete the category. I hope this isn't discouraging, but I have a feeling that it will get deleted eventually if you do nothing. Secondly, I think it is vital to create a wikipedia page for the book. This will require passing en.wp's standards for notability; if you need help with that, I can look into that to. If it meets the requirements, create a Portal page at wikisource. Otherwise, I believe it may be questionable for hosting a list of a non-notable work. We are not bound to wikipedia at all, but since "1001 Children's books.." is copyrighted, I feel we need a good reason to host its contents here. Others may feel different, but that is my input.

I think if all of that can be done, your work will be a great contribution to the site. Also, it may help track works that are generally considered important, but we have not uploaded yet. - Theornamentalist (talk) 20:32, 23 May 2011 (UTC)

I have deleted previous comment, as I see that we are talking about a published work that has notability. I will add the relevant detail to the category, and I think that is sufficient, and probably does not need a specific portal, though you may consider adding it as a subpage to Portal:Children's literature — billinghurst sDrewth 12:33, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Copyright and 1001 Children's books ...

I'm not sure if you have noticed this or not yet but both the portal and category version of 1001 Children's Books You Must Read Before You Grow Up are being discussed on the Proposed deletions page. The main issue is whether or not the list is a copyrighted work. It's based on a 2009 book but, as a list of titles, it may or may not be subject to copyright law. Files, licenses, etc.

Hi, I note that you've recently uploaded some files to Wikisource. Our policy is that files are uploaded to Commons, which then makes them available to all of the sister projects. The only exception is when the file is not acceptable under the Commons copyright policies, but is acceptable under ours. This isn't the case for these three images. See Help:Adding images for more details.

Could you also please add source and license information to any new text you upload? The Fifth Form at St. Dominic's needs both. The source goes on the Talk page using {{Textinfo}}. The license goes at the bottom of the Mainpage. Select the license from Help:Copyright tags.

By the way, is there a djvu version of this book? If so, we would prefer that was uploaded via Commons to the Index namespace and then proofread and transcluded into the Mainspace. Have fun, Beeswaxcandle (talk) 22:58, 5 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Beeswaxcandle. Thanks for reminding me that I had to add the source and license information to The Fifth Form at St. Dominic's. I didn't remember it yesterday and I didn't have much time but I have done it now. The problem is the files only now. I think the White Fang one should be deleted, as a similar file is on Wikimedia Commons. By the way, what should I do with the Arsene Lupin French edition cover? Does it being from France affect the copyright or something? Should I upload the US edition cover of Arsene Lupin instead? And do you mean by what you wrote that Fifthform and Cautionary Tales should be uploaded on the Commons instead of Wikisource? TayyabSaeed (talk) 11:24, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Yes, but I never really left it. It was just because of a problem with my computer that I could not come here for a few days but, otherwise, I've tried to do as much as I could do. The surprising thing is that still there is much work to do and many books to complete. Just go to the new pages I've created and see. Loads of work to do. Anyways, thanks for welcoming me back here. Chapter nomenclature

When we are naming chapters in pagenames, we are looking to use nomenclature like Chapter 30, rather than Chapter XXX. A couple of advantages is that it enables future references to be easily prepared if we have a standard form, plus it is easy to script for previous and next page numbering in headers. Obviously we only look to do it for new works, rather than works underway, we don't expect any changes to work already done. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:43, 23 July 2011 (UTC)
