Page status trouble edit

Page status is sometimes visible, sometimes not - am I missing a toggle somewhere?unsigned comment by Susi Arnott (talk) 11:12, 11 August 2017 (UTC).Reply

This is a known bug. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:35, 13 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
what a shame; lovely gadget 'pages I can validate' rendered ineffective too. Never mind!Susi Arnott (talk) 18:05, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
If you purge the page, by visiting https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Index_talk:Niger_Delta_Ecosystems-_the_ERA_Handbook,_1998.djvu&action=purge and clicking "OK", it should work. It's a pain to have to do, but it does seem to work every time. Inductiveloadtalk/contribs 19:54, 22 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Grrrr, can't make this work, but thanks anyway srslySusi Arnott (talk) 18:04, 23 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

The link above purges this Index talk page. To purge the Index page, the link is https://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Index:Niger_Delta_Ecosystems-_the_ERA_Handbook,_1998.djvu&action=purge To make it even easier, you can enable the "Clock and Purge" gadget under Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets in the "Interface" section, This will add a link in the top right corner that will purge whatever page you're on when you click on it. (It also displays the time in UTC). —Beleg Tâl (talk) 12:23, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Sections edit

@Susi Arnott: Do you know how you want to split up this work? For example do you want all of Section 1 "Prologue" on a single page, or do you want each subsection 1.1, 1.2, etc on separate pages? (I can't find any good examples of what I mean, but let me know if you need clarification.) —Beleg Tâl (talk) 12:31, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

This question is really troubling. Pages as proofread and as in the original document, surely?Susi Arnott (talk) 13:51, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Yes, but the original document is in sections and subsections. So it can be transcluded in one of the two following methods:
or
The decision really depends on how long the sections are, and how disparate their contents. I looked at the contents of the book, and I suggest splitting by section, but keeping subsections together. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 14:22, 24 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I expect you're describing the first example, with fewer headings? If so, I agree!ThanksSusi Arnott (talk) 09:09, 25 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Is this done after pages have been validated?Susi Arnott (talk) 09:04, 26 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

It can be but it can also be done before. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 00:26, 28 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Would you be willing to do this, using your skill and judgement? I'll happily do more initial proofreading on other texts:)Susi Arnott (talk) 04:32, 28 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I can do that. However, I'm a slow editor so don't expect it to be done right away. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 13:01, 28 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Smashing. There's no urgent deadline; had hoped it would be available before the new UK academic year starts but if the main work is done, hurrah. Let me know how and when to assist. Susi Arnott (talk) 19:26, 31 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Susi Arnott: I've done the first two sections (Prologue and Introduction). If you want to use those as an example and move forward with the rest, I can lend assistance if required. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 19:41, 31 August 2017 (UTC)Reply
I keep thinking I've replied to this! Already losing rudimentary wiki-language :) The last few months have shown me just how much work the community invests in this important global resource. Sounds like I'll need to find and ringfence some more days for this new process, before too long. Could you confirm how many other stages or processes there are to go through, before the book is available online? Thanks again, it's really been such an eye-opener; wish other commitments weren't calling so loudly :)Susi Arnott (talk) 20:18, 3 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Susi Arnott: This step is called Transclusion. It is the stage where we take the proofread text and make it available online. For this reason, it is the very last step before the book is available online. Besides transclusion, the only other step remaining is Validation; validation can occur after the book is available online. (Also: validation can not be done by the person who did the Proofreading step, so you will just have to leave it alone and let someone else take care of validation.) —Beleg Tâl (talk) 13:38, 5 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thanks yet again, Beleg. Had a good long go at this today, but stumped at the end by problematic index pages. Jiggled around some of the proof-reading discrepancies, tried calling the section 'Subject index' in case the special Wiki meaning of 'Index' was a problem, and even tried dividing it into 2 sections in case it was too long without the original columns. But still jinxed. Can anyone see what's up?Susi Arnott (talk) 16:45, 6 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Well done. The index page problem is happening because there are too many templates-within-templates-within-templates. Splitting it into smaller sections should fix it, but it might be worth asking on WS:Scriptorium/Help to see if anyone can make it all transclude properly. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 17:20, 6 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Dear Beleg Tal - or anyone; been away for 10 days and can't tell whether all the transclusion up until problematic index pages has been 'undone' or is still extant. Awful to fall at this final hurdle but I simply don't know what to do now. Beginner's Guide starts with 'make a new page' but I can't remember how, and the ones I did before might still be in place for all I know. Can anyone help? Will try putting a message on the Scriptorium as advised, but feels unlikely I'd get the wording right :) Thanks for any pointers. Susi Arnott (talk) 13:55, 16 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Have tried again, but still get this text at the bottom of the transcluded index section, missing the last third or so of the subject index entries

Anyone know how to unpick?Susi Arnott (talk) 08:42, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Now trying to add Categories; but Help:Categorisation assumes you know where to type stuff in. "Non-fiction books", "Ecology", "1998" and "CC BY SA" (or "Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Licence") would be the four main categories they describe. Thanks for any guidance. Susi Arnott (talk) 17:48, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
The date and license categories were already in; find categories listed at the bottom of the page. I have added "Ecology" and "Niger". "Non-fiction" isn't necessary unless there is no subcategory (e.g. Ecology) available. --EncycloPetey (talk) 18:17, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Many thanks, EncycloPetey. Wonder what's next to do? Author page has been re-edited and submitted for review again. Beginner's Guide suggests'Portals' and 'announce', but perhaps that must wait for the Author's page? Susi Arnott (talk) 18:40, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

I'm not sure what you mean about submitting the Author page, but the work is already announced on the Main Page as a New Text. And any completed work can be added to a Portal, if a suitable Portal exists, but it isn't necessary. And for some subject areas there just isn't much information here yet, and so no Portal has been started. --EncycloPetey (talk) 19:26, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Oh good! Was concerned by the Beginner's Guide 'checklist' but sounds like it's not necessary. Thanks to the whole community - and perhaps I can contribute more myself as time goes by.Susi Arnott (talk) 19:49, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
