Kept

Column templates

The following discussion is closed:

Keep; no consensus for delete. potentially re-address in the future. Jeepday (talk) 01:11, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

I have cleaned up the remaining column templates into two kinds:

  • {{multicol}} and co., which deal with cases where the break point must be fixed. These templates have extensive documentation and are widely used.
  • {{div col}} which uses a CSS parameter, useful for cases where you break a list into columns for convenience, not because you are emulating a source. This template can also be split over pages as it is an "open" div template.

There are many templates that we have had to do this in the past, and I have replaced these with one of the two above. The templates I have been replacing, and now am nominating for deletion are:

  • {{col-begin}}, {{col-break}}, {{col-end}}: a close relative of {{multicol}} (both use tables), but lacking in some parameters like "line". It also has a more complex usage (eg more calls of {{col-break}})
    • {{col-6}} and {{col-1-of-6}} appear to be a related holdover from earlier times.
  • {{column list}} and its redirect {{columns-list}}. This is functionally identical version of {{div col}}, with one critical difference: the text in the columns is a parameter, which means that:
    1. It can't be split over two Page: pages using the header and footer fields
    2. It any characters like ! or = appear it will break.

All these templates have been replaced and are unused, though the "what links here" cache hasn't cleared yet. Inductiveloadtalk/contribs 09:23, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Known. That is why the pages that I am aware of weren't transcluded into the mainspace and was left alone to seek a solution at some later point. — George Orwell III (talk) 09:46, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
I'm on it, it's just a CSS bug that no-one noticed or cared enough about to fix. There aren't many sidenotes inside tables. Inductiveloadtalk/contribs 09:55, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Some of our implementations of sidenotes are simply butt ugly, the left and right flipping of text, the fixed widths, and with us often having a right side presentation of text are just as ugly, and also not effective. Having a more robust and effective solution for those underlying components would be most useful, and allowing for the stripping of the {{col …}} type templates. Suggest that we get the solution first, prove its worth, transfer them to the new improved super shiny, then I think that we would have a deal. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:06, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

I still support the deletion of the templates listed, as they achieve the same result by the same method as multicol (i.e. tables), but have a different, less flexible and poorly documented syntax. The problem with the breaking of sidenotes is not related to this deletion suggestion, as both templates (multicol and col-begin) have the same effect. I have still been unable to find a solution for sidenotes that are "trapped" in a table cell like the ones made by this template. However, I consider that an defect in the sidenotes, or the dynamic layout CSS, rather that anything else since, ideally, a sidenote should be able to be positioned as expected regardless of where it occurs in the page's code. Delete after deprecation. The templates are actually virtually identical and have notes that say as much. The problems with different spellings of books have been noted since at least 2008. The templates need to be deprecated prior to deletion.--Doug.(talk contribs) 19:14, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Ugh, this is a disaster.

The idea is to auto-generate a disambiguation page for books of the bible such as Genesis, listing all Bible versions. Two huge problems here:

Firstly, it assumes that "Genesis" can only be the name of a book of the bible or associated biblical commentary, whereas it is also a poem by Nicholas Vachel Lindsay. And "Ruth" is also a novel and a poem; "Mark" is a short story; "Revelation" is any number of poems; and so on. The disambiguation page that this template creates cannot support non-biblical titles, and so we end up with horrific pages like this.

Secondly, it assumes that every version of the bible comprises the same set of books, which is not even close to true; and so we end up with disambiguation pages populated with arrant nonsense links like Bible (Wycliffe)/Haggai.

The problems that these templates create are far bigger than the problem they purport to solve. Delete.

  • delete the first template, and maybe we can rejig the second template so that it can turn components on and off. The second seems to have use in adding to disambig pages at least to do minimise effort, and presuming that having a redlink on disambig pages is within our approved schema. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:00, 13 June 2011 (UTC)

Done. In future you can mark this sort of thing with {{sdelete}} as this is a speedy delete situation. We still need a reason for a speedy delete, so put that in the second field of the template. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:50, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
